Unfortunately, it is not today that the games market Brazil and the world are facing turbulent times, and Electronic Arts is no exception.
In a surprising announcement, the gaming giant revealed a series of changes to its business strategy, resulting in mass layoffs, project cancellations and a significant reorientation towards licensed games.
‘Star Wars’ game canceled
The decision to reduce the global workforce by 5%, equivalent to around 670 employees, marks a strategic move by EA to focus its efforts on internal IP.
CEO Andrew Wilson highlighted the quest for more immersive experiences and expansive narratives as drivers of this change, as the company adapts to a constantly evolving market landscape.
The announcement also brought bad news for fans of ‘Star Wars’, with the cancellation of a long-awaited first-person shooter from Respawn. The cuts affected not only jobs, but projects that had not yet been officially announced.
The president of EA Entertainment, Laura Miele, informed employees about the company’s new direction, prioritizing internal franchises and offering support for already released titles.

Despite the cancellation of the ‘Star Wars’ FPS, Miele emphasized that the difficult decision does not reflect the developer team’s lack of talent or passion for the project.
Rumors indicate that the title, possibly starring a Mandalorian bounty hunter, was in advanced stages of creation.
The professionals affected by these changes will be reassigned to other projects, including hits like ‘Apex Legends’ and new chapters for ‘Iron Man’, ‘Black Panther’ and a sequel to ‘Jedi Survivor‘.
Established franchises such as ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’ continue to be priorities, despite adaptations of Marvel characters and strategic adjustments.
While EA adjusts its approach, the company maintains its partnership with Disney and remains committed to developing new games based on iconic universes.
The impact of such changes will reverberate not only within the company, but also across the electronic games industry as a whole, marking a significant chapter in its evolution.
