Description of Elden Ring Smithing Stones and where to get it

Elden Ring Smithing Stones are a vital resource for upgrading your weapons, so they are one of the most valuable items you will find. At first, these special boulders can be used to power-up your weapons by up to +1, but if you can find more they will go far beyond. Upgrading your weapons in Elden Ring is gradual, and you’ll need to spend lots of Smithing Stones of varying value and rarity to fully upgrade your weapon.

When you start, your weapons will be in their most basic form, but they can be easily supplemented with level 1 Iron Stones, called ‘Tattoo Stones’ in-game. [1]’. The number in square brackets is the rank of the stone, where the higher the number the better the stone and should not be confused with the amount of stone you find.

Tier 1 Smithing Stones in Elden Ring will allow you to power-up your weapons up to +3 with just a Smithing Table, but you’ll need the help of a blacksmith and higher-level gems to get beyond. For example, Smithing Master Hewg in Roundtable Hold offers such a service. Luckily, just using a Mooring Table to upgrade a weapon to +3, such as next to the Fortress in Elleh Church, should be enough to see you amongst many early game bosses.

But where do you find the Elden Ring Smithing Stones and is it difficult to locate them? And how do you get the rarer Somber Smithing Stones for special weapons? Below we’ll show you how to find Elden Ring Smithing Stones and how to collect lower tier ones.

Elden Ring Smithing Stone locations early in the game

For those starting out looking for the Elden Ring Smithing Stones, we recommend going straight to an area called the Limgrave Tunnels. Very close to the start of the game, northwest of Agheel, the optional boss fight dragon, is where the cliffs taper to a point. At the bottom you will see the entrance to the tunnels.

The Limgrave Tunnels is a medium-sized dungeon with a Stonedigger Troll at the bottom, but you don’t have to fight it for your precious Iron Stones. Instead, the realm is filled with enemies mining the walls – seek out gold mines and interact with them to get the Iron Stones you’re looking for! They’re not unlimited, but you’ll find enough level 1 Iron Stones, so if you get enough, you’ll be able to upgrade your weapon to +3 at a Blacksmithing Table – we’ve got you covered in Elden Ring as well. You need to know how to power-up weapons.

Miner enemies in the tunnels also have a low chance of dropping Level 1 Iron Stones, so you can try to collect them and get a few more. Although there are many other easily accessible farming places in Limgrave.

On the cliffs just north of Storm’s Pass is a toppled statue, and a light-filled crack runs beneath it. Summon one of the giant trolls nearby and lure it – if it hits the statue it will break, giving you five first-hand Ring Anchor Stones and a single Tier 2 stone to boot!

Once you’re done with that, the best place to find rank 2 Ironstones to craft your normal weapons is Stormveil Castle itself. While not particularly common, they lie everywhere – we actually struggled more than other types to find tier 2 Iron Stones – but once you get past Stormveil Castle you can start getting them much more easily.

How to breed Smithing Stones in Elden Ring

Once you’ve passed Stormveil Castle and entered Liurnia, you can start getting Elden Ring Smithing Stones much easier. Perform the following steps:

1. Go to the location marked above: Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. At the foot of the cliff is a mine whose entrance is partially hidden by bushes, but once you know where to look it’s not a problem.
2. The tunnel is filled with Stones (and enemies), but keep pushing down until you find the boss, a blue, spinning figure made of blue rock called Crystalline.
3. Kill the Crystalian. He has a lot of health and tends to be very active, sending spinning disks back into his hand. Play defensively and take advantage of the fact that he can be stabbed in the back like a normal person – use summons to get his attention, then get behind him and start killing.
4. Once killed, Crystal drops an item called Smithing Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing. [1].
5. Take this back to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold and give it to them.
6. From then on, you will be able to purchase Level 1 and 2 Smithing Stones from them indefinitely as long as you own the runes.

Where to buy level 1 Smithing Stones?

Tier 1 Smithing Stones are quite abundant in the starting West Limgrave area of ​​the Elden Ring, but only if you know where to look. We’ve already detailed a few good places to look, but here’s a map with lots of places where you should easily clear at least 20 level 1 Smithing Stones in total:

1. Elleh Church – You will find a piece in the Blacksmithing Table next to the Castle in the church.
2. Limgrave Tunnels – There are nine level 1 Smithing Stones for you to collect in the mines and you can collect some of your miner enemies.
3. Bridge near Agheel Lake – You can find a level 1 Smithing Stone on a corpse very close to the edge of the bridge.
4. glowing statue – Attract a nearby Troll to smash it. You will receive five level 1 Smithing Stones.
5. Saintsbridge – You can find two Level 1 Smithing Stones from a corpse on the bridge, but watch out for the Pumpkin Head monster.
6. Highway Cave – Inside this cave, there are three Level 1 Iron Stones for you to loot. All three are found on a single corpse on a high ledge in the main flooded chamber area.
7. Artist’s Cabin – There is a level 1 Smithing Stone lying on the ground just outside the hut.
8. Calling Water Village – You can find a level 1 Smithing Stone on a corpse in the cemetery on the north side of the village ruins.

Where to buy level 2 Smithing Stones?

Elden Ring tier 2 Smithing Stones are functionally identical to lower tier 1 stones, except they allow you to upgrade your weapon up to +6. This means you can collect even more Tier 1 Iron Stones to upgrade your weapon to +5, or focus on getting Rank 2 Stones to reach +6. Regardless, you will always need the help of a blacksmith to do this.

Tier 2 Smithing Stones are significantly rarer in West Limgrave compared to Tier 1 stones, but you can still find a few early ones to help you out:

1. glowing statue – Attract a nearby Troll to smash it. You will receive a level 2 Smithing Stone.
2. Highway Cave – There is a tier 2 Smithing Stone inside this cave. You will find it behind a cave that forms the mouth of a waterfall. Watch out for giant bats!
3. Storm Veil Castle – Two more level 2 Smithing Stones can be found in the castle – one of which is quite early if you choose to scale the outside of the castle to enter the side entrance.

How to get Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring

Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones are used to upgrade special or unique weapons and are slightly rarer. Like regular Smithing Stones, these Somber variants are ranked from level 1 to 10, and each level can only add one boost level to your weapon, up to a maximum of +10. However, the boost you get from each boost level is pretty substantial, so a special weapon of +10 will still be strong even compared to a normal weapon fully upgraded at +25.

While you’re unlikely to find any special weapons early on, it’s worthwhile to grab a few Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones for later storage. Here are a few early-game Somber Smithing Stone locations for you to loot:

1. Limgrave Tunnels – There is a Tier 1 Somber Smithing Stone that you can find in the mine tunnels.
2. Lonely Hound Evergaol – After defeating the Bloodhound Knight Darriwil in Evergaol, you will find Blaidd the Half-Wolf standing outside. Talk to him and get a level 2 Somber Smithing Stone.
3. Storm Veil Castle – There is a level 2 Somber Smithing Stone, which can be found a bit after finding the grafted sprout in the castle.

The best way to get them is with Blacksmith Iji, a giant operating in Western Liurnia. It’s next to the Grace Mansion Road shown above and sells Tier 1 and 2 Somber Smithing Stones for unlimited quantities (assuming you have Runes to spend). It also sells a limited amount of 3rd and 4th levels if you need it.
