Asus ROG Ally: This new feature greatly improves in-game performance

handheld consoles

ROG Ally was an unexpected success for ASUS, which felt it was testing a much more vibrant market than expected. In addition, the manufacturer has already announced the production of a new model that complies with Steam Deck OLED standards. However, this does not mean that the current model is abandoned. A recent update even improves the console’s performance.

But to understand how it works, you need to go back a few months. Last January, AMD introduced a new technology. AFMFFor AMD Fluid Motion Frameworks. Simply put, it is a rendering technology that is relatively similar to FSR, thus increasing the in-game frame rate and making the overall experience smoother. Therefore it is necessary in a portable machine.

How can you enable AFMF to improve the performance of your ROG Ally?

First of all, it is necessary to clarify that although there are similarities with FSR, AFMF is unfortunately less powerful than its companion, and this is for a simple reason: unlike FSR, AFMF is not directly integrated into the game. The technology basically aims to compensate for the lack of FSR support in certain games by providing an intermediate solution. In other words, the image quality will be less good and some visual artifacts will remain here and there.

Despite these minor flaws, AFMF remains a preferred solution to boost your machine’s performance in demanding games. According to AMD, it is even possible to double the FPS of a game by combining the technology with FSR. But as of yesterday, the Asus ROG Ally is the first handheld to offer this functionality. If you have it, this is an opportunity to never restart some games that are too demanding.

However, to take full advantage of its technology, first make sure you comply with the specific conditions announced by AMD. Check the following settings in your game before enabling AFMF:

  • The game should reach: Minimum 60 FPS
  • The screen refresh rate must reach: 120Hz
  • It needs to be in the game full screen (not with window)
  • There vertical sync should be disabled

After all these conditions are met, all you have to do is activate the option from AMD driver settings. The steps to follow are:

  1. Make sure you install the latest update available on your ROG Ally
  2. If this is your case, open the app AMD Software From Windows 11 desktop
  3. Go to tab Gameslater Graphic
  4. Enable option AMD Fluid Motion Frames

There’s no need to restart your console; Just start the game of your choice to see the benefits immediately. However, if the structures are too many and you want to disable the option, simply return to the same menu. Note that the procedure is the same on Windows.
