Click or scroll down on any of the monsters to learn more, but players can recognize some familiar names at a glance. Bishaten, Somnacanth, Almudron, Rakna-Kadaki, Rajang, and MH: Rise mascot Magnamalo all have tougher (or at least different) subgenres returning to the series, while former bosses of the Monster Hunter series will recognize some of the other names floating around, Hermitaur and Ceanataur. It’s like jumping back from Monster Hunter 2.

Beyond that, there is four completely new monsters on this list: Garangolm, Lunagaron, Malzeno, and Gaismagorm, who have never been seen in the Monster Hunter series and debuted on Sunbreak. The first three are collectively referred to as the “Three Lords”, the main bosses who set plot points in the DLC.

Of course, there are many other changes that Sunbreak does, such as adding new materials, mini-monsters, weapons, and more, often based on acquiring new crafting resources like Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Reward Pelts. A rather cumbersome DLC pack as a whole, a secondary campaign that allows players to abuse animals in a whole new part of the world (because although Monster Hunter’s mechanics and story have been updated, the ethics will never be updated).

Diamyo Hermitaur

The first monster you will encounter in Sunbreak is a giant monster crab, this monster has a slight fire vulnerability and uses its bulky armor and summoned minions to harass the player while performing Water attacks. Don’t take your eyes off the claws and cut your face when it’s unprotected. Honestly, that’s good advice none fight.

Blood Orange Bishaten

A variant of the stupid monkey Bishaten, it is more about fiery exploding berries than the poisonous kind. Water and Thunder will hurt him more than anything else, and cutting guns to his head and tail will effectively tear him apart. Armor against the flame and try to get close enough to prevent it from dropping bombs on you.

garangolm

The first of the Three Lords, Garangolm is a giant, clumsy plant monster that attacks with both Fire and Water. It doesn’t have much in terms of weakness beyond a slight vulnerability to Thunder and Slashing (albeit barely), and works primarily with melee attacks infused with elemental damage. Stay agile and try to stay behind whenever possible.

Shogun Ceanataur

Hermitaur is a crab, while Ceanataur is a lobster (and not a centaur as you might expect). Thunder, Fire, and Blast are probably your best bets for breaking through his defenses, and breaking his shell with repeated damage leaves him vulnerable to subsequent attacks. When it comes to defense, you will surprisingly need to prepare against the water. Choose early on whether to prioritize the shell or the head before trying to crack that part of it.

Aurora Somnakant

Obvious solutions will be required to break the ice, an ethereal, icy variant of the current Somnacanth – Fire and Blunt attacks, both of which are weak. It moves fast, is slippery and dodges, so you need to play defensively and guard against Ice attacks until you let your guard down for retaliation.

lunagaron

Lunagaron is the second of the Three Lords, another Ice-based foe who appears to be a huge werewolf. Again, Fire will tear it apart and to some extent Thunder, and if you have a good gun around it probably wouldn’t hurt to use a Blunt gun. Defend yourself against Ice and Iceblight and be careful – Lunagaron likes to immerse herself in frost to power up her attacks. Breaking the ice will stun him, but will then enrage Boss Harag similarly. Beyond that, it’s primarily a melee, so if you need a break, back up your cable bugs.

Astalos

A giant electric Wyvern, Astalos is a volatile foe best blocked by Slashing and Ice damage, but his speed means he’s also suitable for wielding Ammo weapons – they’re less powerful, but easier to hit. Astalos specializes in ranged Thunder attacks and hit-and-run tactics, visibly charging electricity when he’s about to go berserk, but attacking these charged body parts can cancel those attacks (if you do enough damage).

Seregios

Another Wyvern, this dusty golden flake-covered Seregios is weak against Blunt and Lightning damage, but won’t do well against Ice if you have it. Slightly more defensive and clumsy than Astalos, Seregios’ main danger is that he can bleed on most of his attacks, a new status effect that’s deadly if you’re not prepared. Squatting for a while or eating a well-done steak will cure the bleeding, but choose your moment – Seregios will try to save you from such an approach.

Magma Almudron

The strange snake/otter Almudron is back with a bulbous tail and now loads of Fire attacks, so protect yourself accordingly. Magma Almudron’s weak spot is of course the tail bulb, and hitting it with Water/Slash damage will do a lot of damage to the big beast. Almudrones are slick opponents of all kinds, they’ll be out of reach when performing AOE attacks, so try to keep up with him and hit where you can, then back off to avoid the inevitable fiery blast.

Espinas

Espinas, who likes the status effect Wyvern, deals Fire damage as well as Poison as Capcom wants you to be unhappy. While Fire damage is only dealt with ranged attacks, almost everything Espinas does is laden with poison, including fireballs, so keep Herbal remedies handy and use Ice damage to heavily compromise.

Gore Magala

A massive, unclassified monster, Gore Magala is an insect/dragon thing that suffers when hit by Fire and Thunder and can be stunned when hit on the head with antennae. Inflicts new Frenzy status effects with his attacks – this stops his passive health regen and increases damage taken. More interestingly, the only way to heal Frenzy is to attack until the Gore Magala wears off, as dealing damage effectively burns the status effect. Waiting or retreating to take medicine won’t help you here.

Pyre Rakna-Kadaki

If you somehow didn’t think the current Rakna-Kadaki was hot enough, this spider queen is even hotter. Blunt and Water damage will do a lot to damage it (and to some extent Ice like), but other than that it’s the best option to take advantage of Rakna-Kadaki’s long winds. His attacks tend to be brutal and long-lasting, damaging everything around him, but it takes a while to adjust. Use these windows to dive in, do some damage, then get rid of the cables before it crushes you.

malzeno

The third of the three Lords, Malzeno is a great Elder Dragon who spawns new Qurio “Afflicted” monsters, described in more detail below. Uses wide-ranging AOE attacks, requiring speed and creating a new state called Bloodblight; this drains the recoverable red portion of your health bar and reduces health recovery as a whole, but provides some lifesteal on their attacks on the target. It’s actually incurable and will be a problem for the whole fight until Malzeno is defeated, so you’ll have to play aggressively to survive. But be careful – if the big dragon takes enough health from you this way, it will receive a buff that makes it more dangerous. For the best luck, know that they are both weak to Dragon damage and Deals damage to the dragon itself and has a habit of teleporting behind you for quick attacks. Play strong and don’t give up by driving it into the lava when the opportunity arises.

Shagaru Magala

Another Elder Dragon that is actually a deadlier version of Gore Magala, many of the same patterns will apply here. You want to use Fire, Dragon, and Slashing damage, and Poison if you have it, to target the upper body, paying attention to his swoops and flying attacks. Quick guns do well and watch out for the Frenzy Virus we mentioned above. Their attacks have no element, so choose the most general protective armor you have.

Gaismagorm

The final boss of the main Sunbreak campaign is Gaismagorm, another Elder Dragon filled with Qurio, and it’s a bit of a more steady fight than other monsters. Follow the NPC’s advice and stay behind their forearms for the best luck. Dragon attacks will destroy Gaismagorm’s defenses, but like Shagaru Magala, his own lack of elemental strength means you won’t have a chance to resist him. Target Qurio’s buildups on his body to deal massive damage and compromise his attack ability.

angry rajang

Yep, that damn chimp is back. The Furious Rajang is a version of the original that never leaves its reinforced golden fur state, and as a result is as deadly as anything can be. It primarily deals Thunder damage and is weak against Ice (and some Water) if any. Be prepared for an incredibly aggressive enemy and one that can only get worse when he enters a state of rage (which you can cancel by hitting enough on the head).

Lowered Magnamalo

MH Rise’s box cover beast returns in a new, superior form for Sunbreak’s endgame, so get ready to defuse Water attacks. Scorned Magnamalo utilizes the genre’s unique Hellfire stat, causing players to blow up if they don’t charge instantly, and uses wide-ranging strikes and energy beams to launch attacks over a wide area. Your wirebugs will be crucial in this battle – get them ready to deploy asap.

Affected monsters are a new type of monster that can spawn and make up the endgame content of many MH Rise Sunbreaks. Introduced after killing Gaismagorm, Affected Beasts are invaded by parasitic Qurio moths, effectively changing the standard encounter and making them even more difficult. Actual changes to affected monsters:

  • Faster and more aggressive attack patterns
  • Can’t be caught
  • Victory unlocks higher superior weapons/grants the crafting parts needed to craft them
  • Qurio collects certain monster body parts and can be targeted/attacked accordingly
  • Successfully deploying Qurio with targeted attacks will stun monsters – but not doing this quickly enough will cause an explosion that damages the player

It’s a risk/reward attempt – when chasing a sick beast, be prepared for something worse than usual, but if you can do it, you’ll reap extraordinary rewards. Those who can defeat Affected Beasts can overcome anything Sunbreak has to throw at them.
