NetherRealm Studios gave Mortal Kombat fans their first look at the gameplay of the upcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat 1, by showing off the new roster and explaining what “Kameo Fighters” are. Ed Boon took the stage with Geoff Keighley to talk in-depth about how Cameo Fighter’s systems will work during gameplay. showcasing some of the classic looks of the characters in the game.
However, these mostly made fun of a huge roster alongside playable characters when the game was released on September 19, 2023 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC and Xbox Series X|S. Some of the fighters we got to see are Kenshi, Mileena, Kitana, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub Zero and of course Johnny Cage. He is played by action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
As seen in a match at Johnny Cage’s Hollywood home, Mortal Kombat 1 takes the franchise back in time, apparently late ’80s/early ’90slong before the story and the characters became too much.
From the resulting gameplay footage, the fights look much faster than they did in Mortal Kombat 11. The game now features air combos with special launchers and jugglers, assists to keep enemies in the air, as well as special jumps like Scorpion’s hook. That’s what it looks like from the HUD shown to us the game abandons Mortal Kombat 11’s dual stick systemin favor of the only indication, but it brings back the famous “X-Ray” attacks that players love so much.
