“This conflict is bad, unfair and brings nothing but pain” – Pele targets Vladimir Putin over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been going on for more than 4 months. Russian forces did not back down, and the spoils of war continue to increase. As a result, Ukraine’s World Cup qualification match against Scotland also had to be postponed. But it was ‘2 hours of happiness’ last night, Ukraine’s president said after his country came one step closer to qualifying for the World Cup by beating Scotland 3-1.

After the match, Brazilian legend Pele finally spoke about the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine. The Brazilian legend was heard begging Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

Pele made a statement Instagram saying, “I want to use today’s game as an opportunity to make a request: Stop this invasion. There are no arguments that can justify violence. This conflict is bad, unjust and brings nothing but pain, fear, terror and suffering.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pele last met during the 2017 Confederations Cup. A tournament (now cancelled) was played between the champions of each continent. Speaking about the meeting, Pele wrote: “When we met in the past and smiled with a long handshake, I never thought we would one day be as divided as we are today.”

Ukraine defeated Scotland last night with goals from Yaremchuk, Yarmolenko and Artem Dovbyk. Man City’s Zincheko also got a presence for his country in a 3-1 win.

Ukraine will now face Wales in their final World Cup Qualifying match on 4 June. Losing 2-1 against Poland in the UEFA Nations League R1 match, Wales faced Ukraine. However, the team led by Robert Page is gearing up to take back star Gareth Bale against Ukraine.
