‘Still a lot of distance’ – Antonio Conte still dissatisfied despite Tottenham’s historic transfer window

According to Antonio Conte, the Spurs gave their best during the summer transfer window. He believes they continue to lag behind the best teams in the Premier League. Conte said they only invested in two seasoned players in the Premier League.

Tottenham gave their best during the transfer window, according to Antonio Conte, who is concerned they are still far behind the Premier League’s top teams. “You need at least three transfer windows to be a championship contender…” said Conte.

At the start of the summer, the Spurs added seven new players, but Conte stressed they only spent significant sums on Yves Bissouma and Richarlison, two veteran Premier League players from Brighton and Everton.

Young left-back Destiny Udogie, who was only later loaned to Udinese, was signed by them in August. Djed Spence was the previous addition. It was signed in mid-July, and Conte was eager to point out a potential addition.

Prior to that, they bought Bissouma for £30m, Fraser Forster for £60m, Ivan Perisic and Ivan Forster for free, Clement Lenglet on loan and Richarlison for £60m.

“If you sign a player for £80m you have a huge advantage because that means you’re signing the best player.” Conte spoke for the first time since the transfer window closed on Thursday. ‘If you can sign free or loan players, it’s a different situation.

“We did what we could. We did some good things, but to be honest, if I say we have a top squad, there is still a lot of distance and so we need to know that we are just starting this process to develop the squad.

“We signed with the players at the right time because the vision was clear on the money to spend but we only spent it on two players, Richarlison and Bissouma. Others are free to borrow. We did the right things. But if someone thinks we’re done, we’re a long way from that.

“You need at least three more transfer windows to be competitive and fight to be a contender, and also to be in the Champions League, to improve and try to be on par with other top clubs.

“We have to be realistic, there are clubs that can invest a lot, there are other clubs that can invest a lot of money, and it’s difficult.”

Spence has cost £13m from Middlesbrough, but the Tottenham boss classifies him as a potential that needs time to develop alongside others like Bryan Gil and Pape Matar Sarr. Conte did not allow Sarr or Gil to be loaned unless they could be replaced before the transfer date and they remained in North London.

“I was very open with the club,” the Spurs boss said. ‘If someone is going on loan, another player has to come. Otherwise, it’s hard for me to go to training.

‘We’re talking about a really good prospect, young players. To improve, they need to work like Spence and then be ready to become future Tottenham players.

“This should be very clear. Young player, good future but we also need players ready to play in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

“We are ready to play with passion, not just to play and improve during the game, because for us the end result is vital. For me, for the club, for the fans, for everyone. Demand is high and therefore we should know that we must be prepared for this demand.
