Here are the player ratings for this fixture.
Manchester United:
David DeGea 7/10
De Gea has been one of the best players for Manchester United this season and displayed a pair of strong hands to deny Armstrong in the final minutes of the first half. He could have covered the far post to block the goal, but it was more a defensive fault than goalkeeper vulnerability.
Diogo Dalot 6.5/10
The Portuguese fullback used the ball well and sent Rashford exciting crosses in the first half. He was constantly going forward to contribute to the attack. However, he could do better in a situation where the Saints were starting to build an attack on his side for their targets.
Rafael Varane 6.5/10
Varane was very good in the distribution and did not have much trouble in the first half. It held Broja well at times, but could do nothing to stop Adams’ equalizer.
Harry Maguire 6/10
Harry Maguire, who has received a lot of criticism lately, has been very successful in blocking Broja’s middle while waiting for Adams to bring the middle back. He lost the duel with Broja, which could eventually lead to a goal. He hit the target with a header, however, but Foster made a great save.
Luke Shaw 6/10
Shaw was very well in sync with Jadon Sancho on the left flank and released his British comrade multiple times with passing passes. He dropped into the midfield from time to time to distribute the ball well.
Scott McTominay 6/10
He was a bit clumsy in the middle of the park because he made unnecessary fouls and got a warning from the referee. He adapted well to a game change and made a small trade with Pogba that provided a good scoring opportunity.
Paul Pogba 7/10
Pogba played with real authority in the midfield. His tricks and tweaks have caused a problem with aftershocks. The Frenchman kept the ball in the net after Ronaldo’s pass, but the flag was in the air. He was always trying to do something for that winner.
Bruno Fernandes 6.5/10
His pressure was impressive throughout the match. He was constantly trying to do something, but he could not crack the code.
Jadon Sancho 7.5/10
The former Borussia Dortmund player made an impressive debut against the Saints. He was a left wing threat throughout the game. He sent a delicious ball to Ronaldo, who nearly scored, and then scored on his own, linking with Rashford’s pass.
Cristiano Ronaldo 7/10
Ronaldo nearly scored in fifteen minutes as he went around the goalkeeper, but the shot wasn’t strong enough and was cleared by the Saints. He sent a good low ball to Pogba, who scored, but Portugal went offside.
Marcus Rashford 6.5/10
Rashford was very active on the right wing for ninety minutes. He had many duels with the left-back, some of them successful and some of them not. He assisted Sancho’s goal.
Substitutes:
Jesse Lingard 7/10
He looked alive after he arrived and was trying to find Ronaldo and Rashford in the right position. He also earned a good free kick at the end.
Anthony Elanga 6.5/10
He seemed efficient at carrying the ball after arriving, but had no time for direct input.
Southampton
Fraser Forster 7/10
He could do nothing to stop Sancho’s goal but then kept the Saints in the game. He made two saves in a row; the first was to reject Ronaldo’s volley and the second was to stop Dalot’s shot at close range. He finally made a world-class save.
Romain Perraud 7.5/10
His positional play helps his teammates improve attacks from their wings. He made a good shot near the penalty area but was saved by De Gea. He protected Rashford well at times.
Mohammed Salisou 6.5/10
He carried the ball with an authority that helped the team improve play from behind. He was also air-tight at winning duels and covering significant distances.
J. Bednarek 6/10
He was a good partner with Salisou and some of his passes in the second half were crucial. Also, the pass success rate was impressive.
Kyle Walker Pieters 7/10
He was great ahead of the second half. However, at times, he left the gap in his own flank too open. His composure on the ball was smooth and well-distributed.
Rome 6.5/10
His physical presence helped the Saints immensely. He was constantly dropping out flankers on the run; trying to do something from the middle of the park.
Stuart Armstrong 6/10
He shot well at close range in the final minutes of the first half, but was rejected by the Spanish goalkeeper. However, he was caught on the flank many times as he lost some duels in the red shirt.
Mohamed Elyounoussi 7/10
After his impressive performance at Tottenham, he was again very good in this game. He assisted Che Adams and became the player who created the most chances in the match.
James Ward Prouse 6/10
Ward Prouse was very effective on the ball, but not very effective outside the ball. He lost ground duels with the Red Devils midfield but still had good ball distribution.
Che Adams 7/10
Adams, who won the game in the middle of the week, scored another goal for the Saints. He found the back of the net in a very smart finish, beating De Gea by far post. He threatened the defense throughout the match.
