“Our season will be tough..” – Tottenham boss Antonio Conte on Spurs’ loss to Southampton

Disappointing Antonio Conte lamented “mistakes” with the ball after Tottenham’s second consecutive 3-2 loss to Southampton and admitted the season will be tough. Leading Tottenham were unable to hold the lead as the Saints made a well-deserved comeback twice late in the game.

After the match, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said the mental instability of the Tottenham team was to blame for their 3-2 loss to Southampton.

“Of course we should be disappointed” said. “They were good, but I think we made a lot of mistakes, especially with the ball, and I think that kind of situation created a bit of mental instability in my team.

“We started playing later in the second half, we started the right pressure and then we created goal chances.

“We did that in the first half as well because every time we played the ball correctly, we created a situation to go and score, but again, we made a lot of mistakes in the first half – major mistakes.

“We did a good job in the second half, we scored but then we had to be better to defend.

“I saw two goals and conceded two goals, the defense had to stay there. We need to be more accurate but I know very well that we will fight for three points this season and I’ve said it before and I keep repeating it.

The Tottenham manager also stated that the team has improved, but that the players are “very emotional”.

“Of course, we are improving in many ways right now, but we are still very emotional.

“We won 3-2 against Leicester and lost 2-1. Today we won 2-1 and lost 3-2.

“I think we need to improve in that aspect because if we’re trying to grow as a team and be competitive, the first thing we need to develop is consistency, not up and down, not up and down.

“In a team, it’s also important to have experienced players to manage the situation during the game.

But again, it’s a shame because my players gave 120 percent and the effort was maximum. I can’t say that I didn’t see the right attitude or the right commitment because I saw the maximum.

“We should try to avoid defeats like this. I think we could have avoided that defeat today. We should try to manage the situation better, especially when you go 2-1 and have 15 or 20 minutes left to play. We have to get experience from this game and try to improve.

We have to fight and give 120 percent, and I repeat today, the effort was maximum. I wouldn’t say my players’ effort wasn’t good, commitment wasn’t good – no.

“I have to thank my players because the commitments were high. Only then you know that you need to improve in many ways – and we have a long, long road ahead of us.”

Speaking about the upcoming season, the Tottenham manager said that players need to understand that next season will be tough.

said, “Our season will be tough. We have to know that.

“I’m happy with the commitment of my players. I ask them [for] good personality [on the field].

“You can make mistakes during the game. [but] we have to try and reduce [the mistakes]”

Antonio Conte’s men will play against the Wolves in their next match. Premier League.
