A condition in his loan contract is reportedly responsible for Antoine Griezmann’s limited time playing for Atletico Madrid this season. According to Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid may be limiting playing time to prevent Antoine Griezmann from triggering a buyout clause in his striker contract.
Atletico Madrid are reportedly required to make Griezmann’s two-year lease from Barcelona permanent if they play more than 45 minutes in most of their matches. Griezmann is currently halfway through his loan from Barcelona. Griezmann made 21 league appearances for Los Colchoneros last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists. However, he has been given a minor role to play so far in the new season.
Despite only playing 82 minutes in LaLiga, the 31-year-old has shown an excellent performance this season, scoring two goals in three substitute games.
When asked if the club’s rules affected how Griezmann handled playing time, Simeone replied, “They have known me for 10 years. I am a club man and always will be.
“We need to make the players understand that getting 30 minutes well is more important than playing 60 minutes badly.
“Everybody wants to play more minutes, so the coaches are looking for the best situations for the team.”

Nahuel Molina, Axel Witsel and Sergio Reguilon were the only players Atleti brought in during the transfer window; Renan Lodi’s loan to Nottingham Forest was his most notable departure.
Citing their absence from the recent difficulty in raising money, Simeone said: “We have been on vacation since May, June was mixed, we settled in July and August was complicated again.
“It seemed like four could go, three could come… but I think the pandemic crisis has a lot to do with it. We haven’t been able to sell in recent years, and that creates a problem.”
With six points from his first three LaLiga games, Atleti will play his fourth game of the year at Real Sociedad on Saturday. Starting his career with La Real, Griezmann has contributed two goals and one assist in each of his last three league outings to the Reale Arena.
