When and how did Gerard Pique leave FC Barcelona?
Gerard Pique, the legendary football player of Barcelona and Spain, shocked the sport by announcing that he was quitting football as La Liga closed for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Starting his senior football career in Manchester, the 35-year-old defender United won almost all the football trophies he competed for.
Pique has had a successful and trophy-filled career, but as he aged, the 35-year-old has slipped from Barcelona’s back-to-back line. After acquiring Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde, as well as Ronald Araujo and Eric Garcia, Pique was relegated to Xavi’s fifth choice centre-back.
On November 5, Pique faced the last La Liga match for Barcelona against Almeria at the Camp Nou. The 35-year-old player, who started the match, received a standing ovation when he was removed from the game in the 85th minute.
