YouTube Go is dead, Google will end service in August 2022

Who remembers YouTube Go? The app was talked about when it was released in 2016, but has since been forgotten. However, there are several selection arguments compared to its counterpart. First, and this is the main reason for its existence, it is a weakened version of the standard YouTube that allows it to work better on less powerful smartphones.

But that’s not all, because few features that are normally paid are free. This is the local video download status for example. On the other hand, other options are missing, just to name a few. In Europe, however, the practice made very few headlines. And with good reason: With these types of features, it’s primarily aimed at emerging markets, where entry-level and mid-range smartphones are king.

Youtube Go is giving up

In a blog post, Google announced that the app was shutting down. This will happen next August. Officially, the firm has decided that its main app has received enough optimizations to make YouTube Go obsolete. And indeed, in recent years YouTube has received numerous updates that have gradually turned it into a much more convenient and practical tool.

However, despite Google not recognizing this situation, it is most likely the lack of users in the Go version that prompted Google to make this decision. So the question arises as to the future of the dev’s other “lite” apps. Google Go, Google Maps Go, Google Assistant Go or Gmail Go may also disappear in the near future.
