Why did Netflix cancel ‘1899’? Report from the streaming giant reveals reason

Among the many shows canceled by Netflix, a standout is the sci-fi series ‘1899′which, unfortunately, failed to go beyond one season.

Expectations surrounding this production were high, especially coming from the creators of the hit ‘Dark’, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. However, Netflix’s recent engagement report shed light on the reasons for the non-continuation.

‘1899’: Netflix reveals reasons for cancellation

Historically, Netflix has built its reputation as a platform that values ​​both quality and quantity, and this has led to the cancellation of titles that did not meet expectations in terms of success.

Until last year, the company did not publicly disclose details about the viewership of its programs, but a significant change occurred in 2023, with the release of the first data report, titled ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report’.

The document, which covers the period from January to June 2023 and analyzes more than 18,000 works, revealed that ‘1899’ failed to attract a significant number of views.

Premiered on November 17, 2022, the series managed to accumulate 51.8 million hours of viewing during the first half of 2023, according to data from Netflix.

In comparison, ‘Dark’ reached 49 million hours in its three seasons in the same period, that is, three years after its end in 2020.

While it’s unfair to directly compare ‘1899’ to ‘Dark’ given the time difference in gathering viewers, Netflix provides a clearer perspective when compared to another hit released around the same time.

‘Wandinha’, a spin-off of The Addams Family, premiered a few days after ‘1899’ and was a resounding success. In the following months, the series was watched for 507.7 million hours, placing it among the five most watched programs of 2023 — almost ten times more than ‘1899’.
