What is the true meaning of the ‘X’ in ‘X-Men’?

[Atenção: este texto contém spoilers da HQ ‘Os Fabulosos X-Men’.]

The ‘X-Men’ are one of the most beloved teams in the world Marvelboth in the comics and on the big screen.

They will soon be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, just like the Fantastic Four and Deadpool.

But have you ever stopped to think about the meaning behind the letter ‘X’ in ‘X-Men’? It’s probably not what you expect.

Many believe that the name of the Marvel mutant team is due to Professor Xavier, but in fact, it has nothing to do with it.

The answer came in the first issue of the ‘X-Men’ comics, during a conversation between Jean Gray and Xavier himself.

“You have an extra power… one that ordinary humans don’t have! This is why I call my students… ‘X-Men’to represent EXtra power!”, explained Professor Xavier to Jean Gray in the first edition of ‘The Uncanny X-Men’, originally published in 1963.

Thus, the ‘X’ is just a coincidence with the X Gene, responsible for the origin of mutant powers, and Xavier’s own name.

About ‘X-Men’

The ‘X-Men’ made their cinematic debut in 2000 in the film directed by Bryan Singer, ‘X-Men – The Movie’.

The cast included Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, James Marsden as Cyclops, Halle Berry as Storm and Famke Janssen as Jean Grey.

There, there was a different explanation for the ‘X-Men’ name, with Professor Xavier, played by Patrick Stewart, simply saying that it was his students who chose that name.

The existence of mutants is recognized by society in the film, but they still suffer great prejudice from the population, who fear their powers.

Professor Charles Xavier, a powerful telepath, leads a school which seeks to bring together different beings, often rejected by humans.

The school welcomes thousands of new mutants, among them Logan, known as Wolverine, a lonely man with a mysterious past. With Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey, they form the ‘X-Men’.
