The mystery surrounding the origin of the (perhaps, to date) three Jokers that roam the DC universe has finally been revealed. A new villain in the issue explained how the Clown Prince of Crime has several versions of himself.

DC Comics has been flirting with the idea of there being more than one Joker for some time. The first time the proposal appeared was in the “Darkseid War” story arc. In this arc, Batman discovers that there were three versions of the villain after sitting in the omniscient Mobius Chair.

This proposal continued in the book “Three Jokers” (“Three Jokers”), by DC Black Label. In this edition, there are details of how the Jokers operated, in addition to revealing the plot to create a new Joker.

Right now there are two Jokers who are chasing each other in the pages of “The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing.”

After this event, the Joker story used various forms and humorous stories, very Silver Age style, to provide an explanation for the possibility of there being more than one.

So this reveal of “Batman” issue 135 is the closest DC has come to presenting an official story behind the Clown Prince of Crime variants.

Pay one villain, get three Jokers

In issue 135 of “Batman” (created by Chip Zdarsky, Mikel Janín, Mike Hawthorne and Jorge Jiménez), we meet Darwin Halliday, a sane variant of the Joker, also known as Red Mask.

At the time, he is preparing to turn his world’s version of the Harlequin of Hatred. To do this, he uses a multiversal gas, in order to enter the Joker’s mind at the exact moment his sanity was deformed after falling into a tank of acid.

But the process doesn’t work out and Halliday remains as sane as ever. So Halliday persists and, with the help of his girlfriend and partner Crimson, he prepares the machine to try one more time. This time, he successfully manages to return to the moment of Joker’s creation.

However, while he is seeing the world from the Clown Prince of Crime’s perspective, the villain enters his thoughts. At that moment, the villain suggests that it was Halliday’s experiments that created the Joker variants (surprise music!).

In relation :  There are rumors of a possible merger between HBO Max and Paramount Plus

This suggestion is confirmed when the comic reveals that Halliday’s repeated visits to the Joker’s moment of origin created two copies of the clown. Here, Bee Gees would have a fortuitous comment to make (or almost): “I started a Joker”.
