Superman, the iconic comic book hero, is one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in pop culture. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Man of Steel made his first appearance in 1938. Since then, he has inspired generations with his stories and sense of justice.
However, we don’t just know him for that. Especially because he is the defender of Metropolis, a fictional city in the comics that has the protection of the Man of Steel. However, a recent revelation showed that there was another protector before Superman arrived in the city.
And oddly enough, this took even the hero himself by surprise. Did you already know this? So, keep reading and find out who was the first protector of Metropolis before Superman.
Who was the first protector of Metropolis?
The revelation was released on the pages of the latest international editions. This reveal, which is part of the “Dawn of DC” phase, represents a soft reset to update the franchises and introduce innovative elements into the coming years of DC Comics, including the Superman canon.
In issue number 4 of “Superman”, fans can see a tense meeting between the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor, which took place within the walls of the prison where the hero had placed his arch-enemy at the beginning of this new phase.
During this visit, Clark questions Lex about his knowledge of two scientists who recently enhanced the villain Parasite’s power, granting him even more dangerous abilities.
However, what the Man of Steel discovers next is a story from Metropolis’ past that leaves him completely shocked.
Lex reveals that, during his adolescence, he investigated the mysterious disappearances of homeless people in the city.
His investigations led him directly to scientists named Dr. Pharm and Graft, the same ones mentioned by the hero. During this period, Lex used his iconic war suit for the first time, with shades of green and purple.
Furthermore, the villain dares to tell the hero that, long before Superman’s arrival, he himself was the one who protected the city, involved in countless battles.
It is not yet known whether Lex Luthor is manipulating Superman’s mind or whether the story is real. However, there is no denying that this is completely shocking, especially considering that Luthor is one of the Man of Steel’s greatest enemies.
