Created by Leslye Headland, known for her work on “Russian Doll,” “The Acolyte” was the first Star Wars story to take place outside of the series’ main timeline. The series centers on twin sisters Osha and Mae, played by Amandla Stenberg. those who were separated as children and believed the other to be dead.
The series has received mixed reactions from fans and critics, with some welcoming the new look it brings to the Jedi, challenging traditional perceptions of their infallibility. The series tackles complex themes, particularly through the character of Jedi Master Sol, played by Lee Jung-jae, whose actions lead to the twins’ separation.
Acolyte Fails to Convince Star Wars Fans
But The Acolyte also received significant backlash, with some fans feeling that the show’s creative choices contradicted the core Star Wars story of good versus evil. The series has also been a victim of review bombing.a tactic often used to protest the inclusion of black actors and LGBTQ characters.
Despite the controversy, “The Acolyte” received positive attention, especially for its surprises and twists. Manny Jacinto’s reveal as a masked Sith warrior was particularly well-received, with one particular scene featuring the actor garnering a lot of attention on social media.
The cancellation came as a shock to many, considering the many storylines left in the season finale, but it’s not unexpected considering the series’ decline in viewership since its June premiere.
Lucasfilm is now moving forward with other Star Wars projects for Disney+. “Skeleton Crew,” which opens Dec. 3, promises a different tone with its mostly child cast. The second and final season of political drama “Andor” is scheduled for 2025, while a second season of “Ahsoka” is in development.
