Relations between Spotify and Apple continue to deteriorate. The conflict started when Spotify wanted to take advantage of this new European regulation, the Digital Markets Act, which allows it to create another payment method on iOS outside of the App Store and therefore benefit from the commission that Apple receives. But things really got heated on March 4th. That day, the Cupertino company received a record fine of 1.8 billion euros, courtesy of the European Commission, for unfair competition in the music streaming market.
Apple didn’t mince words in its response press release: For the company, only Spotify can be to blame, and in its view, it will benefit greatly from this heavy sanction. Spotify has so far been relatively cautious on this issue, contenting itself with congratulating the European Union’s initiative. However, it is clear that Apple cannot stop here, and according to Spotify, the war between the two giants is not over yet.
Apple will block Spotify updates in Europe
On March 5, Spotify sent Apple the form to distribute an update to its app. But this isn’t just any update because it brings a direct link to the Spotify site, allowing payments to be bypassed via the App Store. Ten days later, the Swedish company still hasn’t received Apple’s agreement to distribute its update. “A new example of how Apple, if left unchecked, will try to circumvent and/or not comply with the Commission decision.”Warns Spotify.
“Given Apple’s track record, Spotify is concerned that Apple’s delay is intentional and intended to delay or hinder compliance.” He goes on to openly request that the European Commission intervene in this matter. Spotify’s conclusion is clear: Apple will always try to maintain its dominant position in the market by “punishing” those who oppose it. Apple has not yet made an official statement about the situation.
