PROCESS: actress files lawsuit against Disney after dismissal

The controversy surrounding the dismissal of actress Gina Carano from the series ‘The Mandalorian‘ gains another chapter, now with the entry of Elon Musk into the judicial scene.

Carano sued Disney and Lucasfilm, claiming she was unfairly fired in 2021, due to posts made on her profile on X (formerly Twitter).

The details of the process

The actress, known for her role as Cara Dune in the popular ‘Star Wars’ series, claims in the lawsuit that her words were distorted to “demonize and dehumanize her as a right-wing extremist.”

The dismissal came after controversial posts made by Carano on her social media.

Financial support for the process is coming from an unusual source: Elon Musk. The CEO of X Corp, the parent company of the former Twitter, has publicly expressed their commitment to free speech, stating that they are proud to provide financial support to Gina Carano.

X’s head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, emphasized a commitment to empowering Carano to pursue her free speech rights and work without intimidation, harassment or discrimination.

The posts that led to Carano’s firing included a controversial comparison between the persecution of Jews in the Holocaust and the plight of people expressing conservative views on Covid-19.

The actress claims that her words were misinterpreted and that the company criticized her for defaming people based on their cultural and religious identities.

In documents obtained by TMZ, Carano argues that she was fired for “not conforming to the progressive orthodoxy” of Disney.

She expressed disagreement with the Covid-19-related policies adopted by the company and the general public at the time.

Furthermore, Carano highlighted the perception of a double standard when citing the case of co-star Pedro Pascal, who was not fired for his opinions in defense of the LGBTQIAP+ community, especially in relation to trans people.

Gina Carano argues that her dismissal was motivated by her differing opinions, and not by the quality of her work.

The former MMA fighter is determined to clear her name and seek justice, while Elon Musk and X Corp support her fight for freedom of expression in the digital universe.

The process promises to open a debate about the limits of freedom of expression and the consequences for professionals in corporate environments, especially in an era of increasing awareness and social debates.
