Plex, the app that lets you organize and stream your own media collection, is getting into a new business: movie rentals. The company announced today that it will open a movie rental store for its customers. Access to over 1,000 games from major studios like WB, Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate and A24.
The movie rental store is the latest addition to Plex’s growing portfolio of products and services, which includes subscription plans, ad-supported streaming, live channels and social features. This is also a strategic decision. Plex is looking to diversify its revenue streams in an uncertain ad market.

What movies can be rented on Plex?
The movie rental store will allow Plex users to rent the latest movies like: “Barbie,” “Wonka,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and even “Mission: Impossible – Deadly Reckoning” start at just $3.99. Movie selection will vary over time based on availability and demand. Users will have 30 days to watch the rented movie and 48 hours to finish it once started. The rented movie will also appear in the “Continue Watching” section on the Plex home screen.
Plex believes that its movie rental store will have an advantage over other platforms thanks to its recommendation engine and social network. Plex users can: Discover new movies according to your preferences, recommendations from friends or viewing lists. Plex also recently introduced a feature that allows users to share their viewing activities with friends, which could encourage more movie rentals.
The movie rental store will be available on all Plex-enabled devices, including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV, Roku, smart TVs, game consoles, smartphones and tablets. Plex said it will add more partner studios and expand its functionality to markets outside the United States in the future.
