Only one person in the DC Comics Universe knows how to outdo the hero Batman: his butler Alfred Pennyworth. The servant who serves the Wayne family has an important role within the fictional universe of the Batman story.
In addition to being the boy’s guardian after his parents’ death, he acts as a mentor and father figure, helping Bruce become the Batman persona.
Alfred has many skills that make us wonder about his mysterious past, before working for the Waynes. It is known that he has experience in dramaturgy when assisting Bruce in an episode, and has proficient medical knowledge. His personal life is almost always in the shadow of the hero and the narrative suggests that Batman may not know the butler as well as he knows him.
Several people have tried to surpass the character, some successfully, others not so much. The list of characters who have tried to take Bruce Wayne’s place as a hero within the narrative is not small. But Alfred was always there, as usual, to guide him. This part of the narrative is presented in the events of the books “Batman RIP” (2008) and “Battle for Cowl” (2009) written by Grant Morrison.
When Dick Grayson took on the new role of Batman in “Batman and Robin #2” the authors show the character’s struggle to make the transition and take on new responsibilities and the difficulties of accepting the Gotham City police force.
At this point, the butler reveals how he knew Bruce Wayne, advising Dick not to treat the position as a memorial, but rather to take on the role. In this sense, the DC Comics universe is coherent when it stops trying to pretend to be a previous version of Bruce and starts to create characters that are different from the original, but that play the same role.
In the storyline, thanks to Alfred Pennyworth, Dick Grayson was able to surpass Batman when he stopped trying so hard to impersonate Bruce Wayne.
