Oscar will have changes to the 2024 awards; see what they are

During the 2023 Oscar awards, the production ‘Everything Everywhere at the Same Time‘, which won the Best Film category, gave rise to the proposal to expand the critics’ vision.

Although changes occur gradually, the award has shown important signs of progress in this direction, and this trend is destined to expand even further in 2024.

To adapt to current changes, the Oscar Academy decided to implement a series of updates and criteria to ensure that the diversity of professionals, teams and actors from around the world is reflected in Hollywood’s most important awards show.

This could result in not only a change in the way films are made, but also significant cultural variety.

Starting in 2024, studios will need to meet certain minimum representation requirements in their projects to be eligible.

Changes to the 2024 Oscars

This year, aiming to include and further diversify the awarding of Best moviethe Oscar will observe these characteristics in the productions:

• Leading or supporting roles must be played by members of minorities, such as blacks or Latinos, or ensure that 30% of the cast is made up of underrepresented groups;

• A specific number of members from underrepresented groups, such as women or people with disabilities, must hold leadership positions, or at least 30% of the overall team must be made up of members from these groups;

• Studios, distributors, and production companies need to offer paid internship or apprenticeship opportunities to members of underrepresented groups, as well as provide skills development and training positions for smaller roles on the production team;

• In studios and/or production companies, it is necessary that leadership positions be occupied by members of minorities or underrepresented groups in the marketing, distribution and/or advertising.
