Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO… they won’t all survive, according to former Disney boss

Streaming services are at war. Netflix, which has been on its own for a long time, now has to face long-toothed rivals such as Disney+, Amazon Prime, HBO Max or Apple TV+, to name a few. According to Bob Iger, not all of them will survive in the medium term.

Bob Iger is the former CEO of Disney. We owe him the rebirth of the company, especially the takeover of Marvel and Lucasfilm and the exploitation of their licenses in cinema. One of his last big projects before he hit the road in 2020 was the launch of Disney+. During a Vox conference in the United States, His analysis on the current streaming market.

Not all streaming services can survive

There are too many services on the market for Bob Iger and not all of them will survive. Naturally, we can think of Netflix, which is in great difficulty right now, but for him, on the contrary, this platform is destined to be permanent. :

“I think Netflix will continue to evolve. They have some issues right now, but they won’t go away. »

He also thinks More than Amazon Prime and Apple TV+ A bright future is promised:

“Streaming isn’t the core business for them (Amazon and Apple) and they’re mostly measured on the bottom line, but these platforms serve other purposes. They will not stop, they will continue to grow. They have resources. They have shown users that they have easy access to good technologies and know how to use them. They will stay. »

However, Iger does not provide other expensive market services, without name : “I don’t think they all will survive”. It’s not hard to see what services the former Disney boss is talking about here. For example, it did not praise the services of Warner Bros., but in the United States it is well established with HBO Max. With good reason: Warner is currently in the process of merging with Discovery, and HBO Max isn’t going to survive it. In an already saturated market, it is not yet clear whether his replacement will find a place for himself. Especially in the United States, there are numerous other platforms that have not been cited as great successes by Iger.
