Until now, Netflix subscribers were able to share their login information with their loved ones at no additional cost, even if they did not live under the same roof. However, Netflix decided to change this policy, citing the financial losses caused by this practice. The platform has therefore implemented measures to regulate account sharing and Detect “cheating” users by checking the IP addresses or identifiers of the devices used.
Netflix’s decision was not well received by the mass unsubscribers, and even by LFI’s MP Louis Boyard. The latter strongly criticized this new policy in a video posted on social networks. According to him, the additional cost of about 6 euros imposed on French subscribers is unacceptable, especially in a context where inflation and poverty are on the rise.
A bill to allow account sharing on Netflix
Louis Boyard urges Netflix to reconsider its decision and allow account sharing, arguing that subscribers who pay for a certain number of screens can watch them wherever and with whom. For this, MP will pass a bill to regulate this practice.
Louis Boyard puts forward the arguments of solidarity and popular culture preservation to justify his bill. He says account sharing allows those who can’t afford their own Netflix subscription to continue enjoying the content. Moreover, it indicates that Netflix had a billion euro turnover last year as it redistributed its wealth by avoiding paying taxes in France.
As for the timeline for this bill, no information was provided by MP LFI. Therefore, it remains unclear when this law could be reviewed or voted on. But, Netflix has already implemented its new rules at the end of May. Whether such a law can be passed in France remains to be seen.
