From the beginning, titles such as ‘Iron Man’, ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Black Panther’ not only captured the public’s imagination, but also excelled at the box office, setting all-time box office records.
However, the year 2023 brought unexpected challenges for Marvel Studios. The long-awaited release of ‘The Marvels’ turned out to be an unfavorable turning point.

According to information from Variety, the film starring Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) faced a reception that exceeded expectations, setting an unwanted record: the worst box office in the studio’s history.
The plot of ‘The Marvels‘ follows Carol Danvers on her journey to deal with the consequences of her actions, after taking revenge on the Kree Supreme Intelligence.
With the universe in disarray, their powers intertwine with those of Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Carol’s niece, Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together, they face the challenge of joining forces to save the universe.
Unfortunately, the initial box office receipts did not fare well. In its first four weeks of release, ‘The Marvels’ only grossed $80 million in North America, equivalent to R$391 million.
The international version failed to reverse the situation, resulting in US$197 million, around R$963.5 million.
The film had a modest start, grossing just $46 million in the United States, equivalent to R$225 million.
These numbers position ‘The Marvels’ as the worst release from Marvel Studios, surpassing even the low box office grosses of 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’.
The disappointing results raise questions about audience reception, especially considering the early holiday release period.
The dissatisfaction expressed at the box office suggests that ‘The Marvels’ failed to capture viewers’ imaginations in the same way that previous Marvel films have.
A notable setback for a studio accustomed to breaking records and wowing crowds around the world.
