Top 10 Horror Movies of the Year: Ranked

In the year of our Lord 2024, horror aficionados have been gifted with a bountiful harvest of chilling tales. Behold, dear readers, for I present to thee the top 10 horror films that hath graced our screens thus far in this fateful year.

10. Trap
Methinks M. Night Shyamalan’s recent creation, "Trap," doth dance on the fine line betwixt chaos and delight. Within the confines of a grand arena concert for a fictional songstress, this tale doth unfold—a fateful journey of a serial killer and his kin, seeking merriment amidst high security. Though a tad unconventional, the tension and stakes doth grip the soul, with Josh Hartnett’s portrayal of Cooper adding depth to our tale.

‘Tis a unique premise, a concert spectacle filled to the brim with fans, yet marred by the presence of Lady Raven, the fictional pop star. ‘Tis a choice peculiar indeed, one that doth detract from the film’s essence, though ’tis somewhat redeemed when one doth realize the fair Lady Raven is the director’s own offspring. Nay, verily, her performance doth shine when given the chance, as doth the rest of the cast. Shouldst thou overlook the quirks and veiled concert escapades, "Trap" doth deliver a thrilling time with a climax most shocking and a protagonist straddling the line betwixt hero and villain.

9. Maxxxine
Alack, the latest offering from Ti West, "Maxxxine," didst falter upon mine first viewing. Although lacking the subtleties of A24’s oeuvre, this tale doth worm its way into the heart. We follow Mia Goth’s journey to 1980s Hollywood, a perfect blend of glamour and gore, a slasher’s paradise. Mia Goth shines bright as the eponymous character, and "Maxxxine" doth offer a competent slasher, replete with grisly demises. Drawing inspiration from Italian Giallo and meta slashers, this film may not reach the heights of its predecessors, yet ’tis a bloody good time for fans of popcorn horror.

8. Speak No Evil
An unexpected surprise awaits in the form of "Speak No Evil." The overbearing hype didst set the stage for a genuine shock, as this slow burner doth unfurl its intricate plot with care. A gripping tale of terror in an intimate setting, with a cast that doth captivate. James McAvoy’s villainy doth chill the bones, set against a family too timid to embrace their fear. The epic finale doth repay thy patience, culminating in a harrowing crescendo that shall linger long in thy dreams.

7. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Though lacking the dread of its contenders, this sequel to Tim Burton’s classic is a charming spree. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" dost tread cautiously, yet ’tis a faithful echo of its forebear, sure to warm the hearts of fans old and new. The returning ensemble doth regale us with tales untold, while Jenna Ortega’s presence doth herald a new era. Monica Belluci and Willem Dafoe do lend their campy charm, but ’tis Michael Keaton who doth steal the spotlight with his wild antics. A sequel fit for the whole family, sure to enchant generations to come.

6. Abigail
Oft overlooked but not to be ignored, "Abigail" emerges as a hidden gem in the realm of horror. From the minds behind the recent "Scream" sequels, this film doth blend genres with finesse. A balletic vampire set against a cast of scream queens, weaving a tale of mystery and mayhem. An amalgamation of genres, "Abigail" doth race forward with no pause, delivering a modern classic brimming with twists and turns. Gory deaths aplenty, a testament to horror’s enduring allure.
