Though the project met an unfortunate end, the recent success of “The Penguin” has resurrected curiosity surrounding the abandoned spinoff’s potential.
Winter, famed for his work on “Boardwalk Empire,” was slated to lead a second spinoff set within the same dark Gotham as “The Batman,” offering a glimpse into the lives of the city’s law enforcers. In a recent interview with The Playlist, Winter unveiled the intricate tapestry of the shelved series that promised to intertwine with the cinematic experience:
“The concept was to transport audiences into a gritty 1970s cop drama — reminiscent of ‘Prince of the City’ — within the tumultuous realm of the Gotham City Police Department,” Winter shared. “The narrative would follow a modern-day cop, a descendant of a lineage deeply entrenched in the corrupt city. The central character grapples with his loyalty and realization of being entangled in nefarious undertakings. The presence of Batman loomed over the narrative, a mysterious figure cloaked in shadows, yet undeniably present in the fabric of this world.”
“Prince of the City,” the iconic neo-noir opus by Sidney Lumet, served as a benchmark for the envisioned series, aligning seamlessly with the crime-driven ethos of Matt Reeves’ universe. As “The Penguin” demonstrated, a crime-centric narrative flourishes in this uniquely harrowing landscape.
The abrupt cancellation of the spinoff arose from unforeseen circumstances, contradicting the usual trajectory of series development. Winter attributed this decision to Reeves himself, who, after numerous iterations, felt a dissonance in the project.
