Lord of the Rings Rings of Power: release date, story, everything you need to know

Will get Lord of the Rings series : Rings of Power. Amazon acquired the rights to some of Tolkien’s work in 2017 and has since worked hard to create the biggest series ever in terms of storytelling or budget. In this small dossier, we will compile everything you need to know about this disproportionate project. Release date, story, movie links, we tell you everything!

What is the official name of the Lord of the Rings series?

We named this series “The Lord of the Rings” because there was nothing else for a long time. But on January 19, 2022, Amazon finally decided to give us an official name: Rings of Power (Rings of Power).

This title refers to the rings given to the different races of Middle-earth before Sauron forged the One Ring to control them. This gives us a clue as to what the show will tell…

What is the release date of the Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power?

The first episode of the Lord of the Rings series will air on September 2, 2022. Not all episodes will air at the same time.

Rings of Power

A few weeks before the series’ release, Amazon finally released an epic first full trailer over 2 minutes long. The trailer for the plot remains unclear, but Galadriel, the elf queen played by Morfydd Clark, has a vision that something very bad is about to happen and tries to convince Robert Aramayo’s Elrond of it.

On which platform will The Rings of Power be released?

The series will air on Amazon Prime Video. It’s really Jeff Bezos’ firm, which bought the rights under the nose and beard of Netflix and HBO at a high price from Tolkien’s heirs. A huge budget of $465 million was set for the first season alone.. For comparison, the first trilogy costs less than $300 million. Pirates of the Caribbean 4, the most expensive movie in history, cost him $410 million.

Lord of the Rings

who is making the show

Each series should have its own showrunner. JD Payne and Patrick McKay Those who fulfill this role for the Lord of the Rings Rings of Power. These two screenwriters, who have worked together for over twenty years, not well known to the public. They have scripted recent hits like Godzilla Vs Kong or Jungle Cruise. Amazon made the choice to bet on these two unknowns, reminiscent of the bet HBO made in the late 2000s. The chain relied on then-anonymous David Benioff and DB Weiss for the series Game of Thrones, with success as we know it. Will this new creation centered on Middle-earth suffer the same fate?

Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy not included in the project.

Rings of Power

JA Bayona, the best-known Spanish director of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, is the executive producer and director of the first two episodes. In the first season, Amazon also brought together a good team of writers, many of whom worked on prestigious projects like Breaking Bad, Stranger Things or Toy Story 4.

Will we see famous actors on screen?

Amazon will be betting on lesser-known players for its series. Some will take on the roles of characters already featured in the movies. For example, actress Morfydd Clark plays Galadriel (Cate Blanchett in the movies) Robert Aramayo plays Elrond (formerly Hugo Weave). Changes that may annoy viewers, but keep in mind that there are “young” versions of the characters we know here.

Rings of Power

Here is the cast of the main characters we will see in the series:

  • Robert Aramayo as Elrond
  • Morfydd Clarke: Galadriel
  • Owain Arthur: Durin IV
  • Nazanin Boniadi: Bronwyn
  • Ismael Cruz Cordova: Rounding
  • Markella Kavenagh as Elanor
  • Sophia Nomvete as Disa
  • Charlie Vickers: Halbrand
  • Benjamin Walker: Gil Galad.
  • Daniel Weyman: The Stranger
Rings of Power

What will be the story of the series?

The plot will take place in the second age of Middle-earthThousands of years before the Peter Jackson films (set at the end of the Third Age).

LOTR map

For nowwe don’t know the exact scenario, The first teaser just sets the mood. However, fans are already starting to guess a few things. No particular book fits here, but Tolkien’s Second Age chronology should be followed. The goal is to tell us an unpublished story that fits his writing perfectly. Amazon is contractually obligated to do so if we are acting on the terms of the agreement signed in 2017. So there is no change in the chronology, but this will not prevent surprises.

The title of the series gives a big clue about the main theme adopted: power rings. This story was already quickly told at the opening of The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001, but this time we have to dig deeper.

To trust all this, the series should tell how Sauron seductively deceived the different races of Middle-earth into crushing them under his boot thanks to the One Ring. Significant events from Tolkien’s writings must be witnessed, like the sinking of Numenor (The equivalent of Atlantis in Tolkien’s world) or the War of the Last Alliance.

Rings of Power

events will happen Through the eyes of characters like Elrond, Durin, or Galadriel. The series also promises to follow up with more intimate stories such as the impossible love between the forest elf Arondir and the human Bronwyn. We will also meet members of the Pievelus race, the ancestors of the Hobbits we see in the movies.

Rings of Power

serial should be published around the character of the stranger, the man descended from the sky thanks to a meteorite. Speculation continues about his identity. Sauron? Is she a witch? Is it a new character? For now, it’s a mystery.

Rings of Power

Finally, the first episode of Shadow of the Past, will take place in the First Age and will serve as a great introduction to the rest of the series. Therefore, we should watch the elves battle against Morgoth, the ultimate lord of evil in the universe of Tolkien (and Sauron’s boss). In the trailer we see an elf fighting orcs, some fans believe he is Finrod, who fell during the battle against this great villain. This image will therefore be taken from the first part. Note that this is Galadriel’s brother, so his death should give the character motivation to fight the dark forces.

Rings of Power

Of course, we should have more details about the story of this series in the coming months.

Any connection to Peter Jackson’s movies?

This series does not exist It has nothing to do with the two Peter Jackson trilogies. This is a completely different project. Amazon did indeed get the rights to the Second Age of Middle-earth. Warner Bros. owns the rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (third age, hence) books through the Zaentz Co company, for its name. Amazon doesn’t even have the right to use the name of certain characters (such as Gandalf or Aragorn) or creatures. Not including Peter Jackson. Then we might think we’re dealing with two separate universes, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Rings of Power

Amazon will tell us A story set 3000 years before the events of Lord of the Rings, thus essentially independent. The platform promises that this series can completely anchor the movie universe, and it has done everything possible for it. For example, the first season was filmed in New Zealand, and the artistic direction seems to have been inspired by Weta Workshop’s work on the trilogy, both on sets and costumes.

In short, there is no direct link to report on, but Amazon has a genuine desire to create something consistent with what already exists. After all, the movies have now become cult and it is thanks to them that many people later became interested in Tolkien. It is fair to try to honor them.

The Lord of the Rings license is attractive, and Amazon isn’t the only company looking to take advantage of it in the future. Other projects are in progress.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the films, announces production From an animated movie called War of the Rohirrim. Derived from the trilogy (who will therefore take over the artistic direction), it will tell the story of Helm Main-Marteau, lord of Rohan, fighting the Dun men 250 years before The Lord of the Rings. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the movie will be released on April 12, 2024. It has nothing to do with Amazon’s series.

War of the Rohirrim

Variety also revealed that the movie and video game rights to Lord of the Rings are up for sale. Zaentz Co., which has held the rights to the books since 1976 (now run by Warner), is looking to resell the books for at least $2 billion. Nothing has been done for now, but if a buyer is approaching, the universe may continue to be exploited in the future. Relationships between Zaentz Co and Warner have always been strained since the movies were released (due to big money stories), but the Hollywood studio intends to continue to bet on this license in the future, especially thanks to the aforementioned animated film. above.

A video game called Gollum and developed by Daedalic is also in development and should be released in 2022. As the name suggests, this will allow us to embody poor Smeagol. This game is completely standalone and has no affiliation with the Amazon series or Peter Jackson movies.

Finally, the MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online (2007), which is based on the book and has nothing to do with the movies, he continues on his little path in silence. It recently received a new expansion and will qualify for a major graphics update later this year.

Of course, we are still relatively far from the release of the series. However, we will regularly update this file with all the information we have.
