Previously, in early drafts, Loki Laufeyson (played by Tom Hiddleston) would emerge as a hero by saving the Time Loom, thus preventing the implosion that threatened the timelines of Multiverse.

However, something didn’t feel right to the creative team.

“Something didn’t feel right to us, and the problem was that the draft didn’t have Loki destroying the Loom [Temporal]. He would save the Loom from imploding and ascend to the throne. We knew something was missing, but we didn’t know what. Because it was like, ‘Well, he’s trying to save the Loom, he gets the throne, all that stuff,'” Moorhead explained.

The turning point came when the team realized that Loki would save the day without facing any real challenges. It was at this point that the idea of a sacrifice essential to the character came about.

“But the problem was that he didn’t have the sacrifice, so we thought, ‘Why doesn’t he just destroy the Loom and take on this huge responsibility? He doesn’t gain anything from it.’ It seems so obvious now, the right choice. But it was a turning point in development, when we realized that Loki needs to destroy and become the Loom.” added the filmmaker.

This unexpected decision provided an emotionally powerful outcome, defying viewers’ expectations.

The twist-filled second season of Loki is now available to stream on Disney+.
