‘Inside Out‘, the beloved animation that delves into Riley’s emotional universe, is back, but this time with a time jump.
The film promises to follow the protagonist as she faces the challenges of puberty, navigating between school and family.
The already known quintet of feelings — Fear, Anger, Disgust, Sadness and Joy — returns to guide Riley through this new phase. However, what is new is the inclusion of previously excluded feelings: Boredom, Embarrassment, Envy and the infamous Anxiety.
A bold choice by producers and director Pete Docter, who decided to explore the character’s emotional complexity more broadly.
Exploring emotions

Docter and his team initially chose to focus on the five feelings in the first filmproviding a simpler and safer narrative for an eleven-year-old child.
However, when faced with Riley’s puberty, they realized the need to add deeper emotional layers.
In an interview with USA Today, Docter shared the challenges faced in choosing affections. Extensive research has been carried out to understand the range of human emotions.
However, the responses of the scientists consulted were divergent, ranging from 17 emotions to denials about the reality of emotions.
During the development of the first film, some affects were excluded from the list, considered too complex and dark for the initial proposal.
Among them were Embarrassment, Depression, Envy, Pride and Irritation. Amidst competitors such as Greed and Melancholia, Tédio was put on hold.
The decision to reintroduce such emotions in the new film demonstrates the evolution of the narrative, marked by the inclusion of darker but equally important emotions.
A Pixarupon releasing the latest trailer, reveals its new approach, balancing emotional complexity with the friendly and familiar atmosphere that characterizes the series.
With the inclusion of deeper affections, ‘Inside Out’ promises an enriching emotional experience. Anxiety, boredom, embarrassment and envy come into play, expanding the emotional universe of the animation.
Thus, Pixar reaffirms its commitment to providing not only entertainment, but also reflection on the complexity of human emotions.
