The streaming giant Netflix is about to implement a new strategy to keep viewers interested, exchanging compatibility percentages for a system based on tags.
But how so? Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything!
Netflix will replace relevance percentage with tags – Image: Reproduction
According to a recent report from The New York Timesthis tag system stands out for its visual ‘hooks’ that draw the viewer’s attention to relevant titles.
Allan Donald, director of product at Netflix, compares the effectiveness of tags to the title on the cover of a magazine.
About this, he says the following:
“Imagine magazines that don’t have cover headlines and there are just photographs in them,” says Donald. “Tags make as much difference as a cover story in deciding ‘this is for me’.”
The power of detail
According to the report from The New York TimesNetflix currently has approximately 3 thousand tags.
The most popular include ‘romantic’, ‘exciting’ and ‘suspense’, while the least used is one called ‘Occupation: Farm worker’.
These tags give a certain musicality to the recommendation system to users, allowing viewers to discover new titles of interest based on specific tastes.
Sherrie Gulmahamad, a senior tagger on the platform, emphasizes the importance of nuances in similar tags.
Although some may seem similar, such as ‘falling in love’, ‘finding love’ and ‘looking for love’, these tags were considered distinct and different enough to justify their separation.
A strategy with potential
This change represents a departure from the percentage-based approach that Netflix has used until now to suggest titles to users.
The idea behind the new system is that it offers more customization and direct viewers to the content they actually want to see.
However, Netflix has not yet announced when the new tagging system will be fully operational.
For now, viewers will have to make do with existing recommendation methods until the new system is released.
The movement for tags is an example of how Netflix continues to innovate to deliver a superior user experience and help viewers discover new content to watch.
After all, with a library of thousands of titles, it can be difficult to figure out what to watch.
