Empire or Republic? Map shows which side countries would be on in the ‘Star Wars’ universe

The saga ‘Star Wars‘ is characterized by its complex narrative that echoes from political to social issues, also being influenced by important historical events.

George Lucas, creator of the franchise, revealed an inspiration he had for his trilogies: the first, in the Vietnam War and the transformation of democracies into dictatorships; and the other in the conflicts that led to the Civil War in United States.

This essence of conflict and power was taken to the core of the saga, focusing on the eternal clash between the Empire and the Republic, with the constant transition of power between both throughout the franchise.

‘Star Wars’: Empire or Republic?

Also, still on the previous topic, the mobile game ‘Star Wars Commander’ (2014) was based on this concept.

When it reached the five million user mark, the developers celebrated the success by sharing a map that reflected players’ choice between sides in the conflict.

On the map, the color blue represents the Empire, while orange represents the Republic. Check out the map below:

The observed pattern revealed an interesting division: the majority of the global South tended to choose the Rebels, while the North aligned with the Empire.

Countries such as the United States, Canada, Russia and Japan (in blue) predominantly opted for the Empire.

In contrast, regions of Africa and Latin America, including Brazil, were marked by orange, the color associated with the Republic.

A closer look reveals a complex divide in Europe. While Spain, much of France and Italy are among the Rebels’ supporters, Germany and United Kingdom lean towards the Empire.

Players’ choices, while based on a fictional narrative, draw intriguing parallels to the real world.

After all, they show how political preferences and affinities can transcend borders and manifest themselves even in an entertainment environment.

‘Star Wars Commander’, a game inspired by ‘Star Wars’, not only offers entertainment, but also reveals, in an unexpected way, an interesting reflection on how fictional narratives can mirror and influence the perceptions and decisions of individuals in global contexts.
