As you probably know, Netflix has officially ended account sharing in France since May 2023. From now on, users have to pay € 5.99 per person per month. And while we fear the mass departure of customers, the streaming service’s subscriber count has exploded.
In the second quarter of 2023, Netflix has registered at least 1.8 million additional subscribersthis allows the platform to approach the corners again 234.5 million users worldwide.
Disney+ is also considering ending account sharing
Not surprisingly, the method is starting to make the competition jealous. According to the information shared by our colleagues from the British agency Reuters, Disney is also considering banning account sharing on Disney+.
For now, the big-eared firm is testing in a particularly vibrant market, namely India. For good reason, only India should represent the streaming market 7 billion dollars in 2027. Another important detail is Disney+ Hotstar (the variant of the platform available in India and Indonesia), number 1 in India. 50 million users per hour.
A different method than Netflix
According to Reuters, the method Disney uses to limit account sharing will be less strict than the one Netflix uses. The world leader mainly relies on users’ geographic location (via IP address and device identifier), while Disney only limit the number of users allowed on a single account. Currently, Disney+ Hotstar Premium Plan subscribers can sign in to up to 10 devices with a single account.
With the new platform policy, This number will increase to 4. According to Reuters, Disney chose to do so due to Indian user habits. According to statistics from the American company, only 5% of Premium subscribers share their account on more than 4 devices. Of course, now one question remains: After India, Is Disney considering ending account sharing in France and Europe?
