Dark Horse Comics partners with Mike Mignola and announces new ‘Hellboy’ comic

Dark Horse Comics and the creator of “Hellboy“, Mike Mignola, announced a new comic book called “Giant Robot Hellboy”. The concept emerged from a small sketch created by Mignola during the pandemic, and will now be developed into a full series of comics.

In the story, Mecha-Hellboy will face Mega-Monsters. To bring this idea to life, Mignola will collaborate with artist Duncan Fegredo. The series will have three editions, launching later this year.

Hellboy is a fictional character from comicscreated by Mike Mignola in 1993. He is a demon who was summoned to Earth as a child during a Nazi ceremony, but was eventually found and raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who taught him how to use his powers to fight evil.

In the story of “Giant Robot Hellboy”, Hellboy himself is captured and integrated into a gigantic mecha to carry out a mission on a mysterious and distant island. However, the place presents its own challenges and may offer resistance to the undertaking. Mike Mignola issued a statement and shared his excitement with fans.

“Giant Robot Hellboy is my obvious homage to all those Japanese giant monster movies – which I actually have no particular love for. What I LOVE is hearing Geof Darrow and Art Adams TALK about these movies, so I actually think this series was inspired by these guys. I had the idea for this story a long time ago, but I thought it was too silly to actually do – then the pandemic hit and I started making all those sketches I posted online.”

The creator of “Hellboy” also explained how the partnership with artist Duncan Fegredo came about:

“I had never seriously thought about what a giant Hellboy-style robot would look like, but I made some sketches and liked them. So the idea started to seem like something that could actually be done. However, I knew I wasn’t the best suited artist for this and was aware that both Arthur and Geof were busy with other things. So the only other artist I thought of was Duncan. I had no idea how Duncan would respond. Would the idea be very silly? I didn’t know, but I decided to introduce her to him and, if he said no, that would be the end. The rest is history.”

The “Giant Robot Hellboy” comic book, produced by Dark Horse Comics, will be available for sale from October 25th this year.
