The rivalry between Batman and Catwoman is one of the most iconic and enduring in comic books. Over the years, readers have witnessed a complex relationship between these two characters, oscillating between attraction and confrontation.
However, in the recent pages of DC comics, it’s clear that the publisher is sowing the seeds for an imminent war between the Dark Knight and the feline thief.
Batman and Catwoman are at odds once again
In “Batman #136”, by writer Chip Zdarsky, the Dark Knight returns from his mission in the multiverse after having a confrontation with the robotic villain known as Failsafe. Batman then hears that Selina managed to escape from prison while he was away from Gotham.
In this way, Bruce decides to confront Catwoman and demands that the two talk immediately about the situation of disagreement in which they find themselves.
Selina begins “DR” by criticizing Bruce for being so absent from Gotham, so Batman retorts by talking about the prison break. Selina defends herself by saying that this was the way she found a new beginning, like Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin), who also ran away.
The atmosphere becomes even more tense when Batman discovers that Catwoman hid the Penguin’s escape, as he claims that the villain’s supposed death was the reason for activating Failsafe.
“The robot I created”says Bruce, “He came after me. Behind my family. All because he thought I killed Cobblepot”. He continues: “You hid this from me. Selina. We shouldn’t have secrets from each other.”
Afterwards, Batman explains to Catwoman what his experience in the multiverse was like and says that he met another version of the thief in the world of Red Mask. Selina counters, stating:
“I am no other Selina. It is me. And I didn’t know you created some damn robot to kill yourself. Wow. And you think I keep secrets from you?”
New crossover
In May, DC announced a new crossover, titled “Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War”, which arrives on August 29th of this year. Check out the synopsis provided by the publisher:
“A coordinated effort in Gotham City has resulted in a reduction in violent crime, but at what cost? The villains scatter as their lives begin to fall apart under a new regime.
As Batman recovers from his epic battle for the Multiverse and the horrors of Nightmares, one name echoes in his mind. A name at the heart of this new, safer Gotham: Catwoman.”
The crossover will begin with “Batman/Catwoman: Gotham War – Battle Lines #1”, written by Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto and Tini Howard.
