Brazil is left out: list of pre-nominees for the 2024 Oscars is released

The first phase of suspense surrounding the Oscar 2024 has been surpassed. This is because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood has released the list of pre-nominees in some of the main categories of the award.

Among them is Best International Film, and the news is not good for Brazil.

Once again, the country was left out and will not compete for a statuette. Expectations were high regarding the possible nomination of the film ‘Retratos Fantasmas’, by the filmmaker from Pernambuco. Kleber Mendonca Son.

The film’s absence from the pre-nominations marks yet another absence for Brazil at the Oscars. The last time the country received a nomination was in 1999.

Since then, the country has only made it onto the shortlist in 2008, with the film ‘The Year My Parents Went on Vacation’, which did not make it onto the Oscar shortlist.

In total, the Academy announced the pre-selected winners in 10 categories. One of the highlights is ‘Barbie’ movieowner of the biggest box office hit of the year. To give you an idea, three of the songs competing for a nomination in Best Original Song are part of the production.
