Everyone knows Akira Toriyama, after all, he is the creator of one of the best-known manga and anime. Of course we are talking about “Dragon Ball”, which has won a legion of fans around the world. In Brazil, the anime became much more famous due to its airing on TV Globo.
However, something that really bothers the public is why Akira Toriyama no longer makes any manga. And he himself responded to the public through an interview for the Anime Senpai.
So, if you were really in doubt about the reason why the mangaka stopped drawing, here’s the explanation, especially for those who are big fans and don’t know what happened.
Why doesn’t Akira Toriyama draw anymore?
For many, the reason may be somewhat banal, but only those who have a favorite work tool know what it’s like to lose something of great value. And this is where the case of Akira Toriyama comes in, as he said he stopped drawing because he lost his favorite pen holder.
Made of wood, the pen holder had enormous sentimental value for the mangaka, because he bought it himself when he was just 14 years old. The object was used throughout his career, until the release of “Dragon Ball Super”, which is designed by Toyotarou and written by Toriyama.
The pen holder was lost during the production of “Sand Land”, the upcoming film adaptation of the same name by Akira Toriyama. And he explains that, even though he used several other pen holders, he always ended up going back to using the one he acquired at 14 years old. So, it was very special to him.
Check out what Toriyama said:
“’Sand Land’ was completed by scanning the inked paper manuscript into a computer and using software to apply solid colors to my own tones.
I probably barely slept doing the work… After finishing all the episodes, I lost my beloved wooden pen holder that I had been using since before my debut.
It was a pen holder that had been familiar in my hands for a long time, being carved and worn with a knife and sandpaper… I ended up buying a new pen holder and trying to sharpen it, but it just didn’t feel right. Since then, I’ve been using it as an excuse to barely draw any manga.”
Wow, Akira, get back to drawing, because fans are asking for new manga drawn by you. After all, “Dragon Ball” is one of the mangaka’s biggest successes and attracts a legion of fanatics for the story of Son Goku and his gang.
