Babar Azam and Co. did not repeat 1992
Despite the uncanny similarities between Pakistan’s ODI World Cup campaign in 1992 and the T20 World Cup campaign in 2022, Men in Green failed to repeat history and Jos Buttler’s England lifted the coveted trophy for the second time at the T20 World Cup.
Butler won the draw and asked Pakistan to strike first. Everything worked according to plan as British bowlers limited Pakistan to just 137/8 in 20 overs. Sam Curran, who was later tried as Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament, swam three goals.
England could have comfortably chased the small goal as they did against India in the semi-finals, but Pakistan’s bowling attack led by Shaheen Afridi was only a resistance. After Buttler’s dismissal, although Pakistan thought they had the momentum under control, Ben Stokes– the big match player – was still in the wrinkle.
He took time to settle down and played point balls, but sped up in the final passes to help his side win the match by five wickets. The British lifted the trophy for the second time, the first was in 2010.
