The much-anticipated century by Virat Kohli finally came to pass as this talisman Indian cricketer smashed his 71st century in all formats against Afghanistan in the Asian Cup 2022 Super 4 at the Dubai Interational Stadium on Thursday 8 September.
The huge stadium was packed with over 1,000 spectators to watch Kohli complete his century. With the help of 12 fours and six sixes, he broke 122 runs and 62 balls. With this first tone at T20, Kohli has recorded his first since November 2019.
Notably, Kohli has also equaled Ricky Ponting’s 71 cereer centennial tally across all formats. Kohli is just behind the legend Sachin Tendulkar which has 100 international centuries to its name.
Speaking of the match, the rest of Rohit Sharma saw KL Rahul snatching the side. Rahul and Kohli opened the innings and formed a 119-man partnership between them. Kohli’s kick helped India post a big 212/2 in 20.
“I feel so blessed right now, so grateful. The last two and a half years have taught me a lot. I’ll be 34 in November, so congratulations [on getting to landmarks] all [a thing of] past,” Kohli said after the game.
“I put a lot of things into perspective and was actually a little shocked because this is the format I least expected a century to come in, but it’s all by the grace of God. “I work hard and this was a very special moment for me and my team.”
“And kissed my ring [on a chain around his neck] also at the celebration. You see me standing here like this right now because [of] everything put in perspective [and] made by someone who has been by my side all these hard times – this [his wife] Anushka [Sharma] and this face is specially dedicated to her and our little girl Vamika.”
