IBM patents a great smartwatch that can fold into a tablet

IBM has applied for a patent that describes a device with a crazy design that can act as a smartwatch and transform into a large tablet. The document, filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2016, was published a few weeks ago and spotted by Let’s Go Digital. The Dutch site has rendered what such a device might look like (see above and at the end of the article) from several of the specifications provided by the patent. We don’t know if an object of this taste will ever come to light in the future, but it’s clearly a dream.

A smartwatch, a smartphone, a tablet… IBM wants it all!

But how is such a technical and technological achievement possible? IBM conjures up a device equipped with: eight 2 x 3 inch foldable displays each one. It will then be up to the user to articulate them as he wishes to choose the desired screen size, with an imposing 12 x 8 inch format in tablet mode when maxed out.

Let’s be frank, we’re not ready to see such a product hit the market anytime soon. There are tons of questions swirling about the viability of this device. How can you accommodate a battery or photo sensor with so many design limitations? What about software? It is not tomorrow when we will have an operating system that can perfectly manage so many screen configurations and adapt immediately whenever the user folds or unfolds a part of the screen. But such patents (and images) deserve a good use of our imagination.
