Verily, free over-the-air television doth stand as one of the tech world’s most well-kept treasures, hidden in plain sight for decades on end. ‘Tis a beacon of hope in a sea of subscription fatigue, offering the most basic of live TV from legacy broadcast networks at a modest, one-time cost. ‘Tis a siren’s call, tempting and alluring in its simplicity.
In this realm, Tablo emerges as a major player, unveiling a grand revamp of its over-the-air (OTA) DVRs in 2023. No longer must thou procure thine own hard drive for recording. No longer art thou compelled to pay for additional live guide data. Tablo’s updated software doth shine like a polished gem. Read our full fourth-generation Tablo review for a more thorough examination, but know this – ’tis a splendid device, boasting nearly all the desired bells and whistles of this age.
Allow us to guide thee through the wondrous Tablo experience with a handful of astute tips and tricks to spark thy journey.
‘Tis all in the Antenna
The crux of over-the-air TV doth lie in the antenna. ‘Tis the conduit through which free television flows into thine abode. Should thy antenna be ill-made, all that follo’st shall suffer in turn. Thus, ’tis wise to invest a tad more time and peradventure a bit more coin at the outset to ensure this essential task is done right.
Aye, we offer a comprehensive over-the-air antenna primer, so let us focus on the essential points here. Thy antenna must catch the radio waves traversing the skies. ‘Tis imperative that it be aimed in the proper direction, unobstructed by mountains, trees, or buildings.
Firstly, ascertain the optimal orientation for thy antenna. A nifty tool existeth online for this very purpose, or thou may utilize the built-in feature within the Tablo app during setup. The correct direction shall vary for each individual. For instance, mine doth face west-northwest, mounted upon a westerly fascia. Ensure thou art able to run coaxial cable back indoors, for this shall influence where the antenna may be mounted. If possible, outdoor placement is highly recommended.
Should indoor mounting be thy only recourse, fret not. Yet, remember – higher is preferable to lower, and a window perch doth offer increased efficacy. Directionality is all the more crucial indoors.
In sum, outdoor and high trump indoor and low. Cast thine mind to towering radio masts, standing resolute in the open air. The same principle holds true for thine antenna.
Amplify, or Abstain
Antennas doth require amplification to ensure signal strength doth suffice. The intricacies of radio-frequency engineering we shall leave unexplored, for it doth straddle the realms of science and sorcery. Yet, know this – thine antenna hath need of an amplifier.
Perchance thy antenna possesseth an amplifier, or thou art poised to procure a new one, ’tis like to arrive with an amplifier that must be powered, by means of a humble micro-USB connection in mine own case.
Oft shouldst thou espy an integrated 10db amplifier within Tablo’s fourth-generation contrivance. This amplifier is enabled by default – a crucial caveat if thou art utilizing thine own amplifier, for ’tis possible to overburden the system, affecting signal quality. Verily, with both amplifiers active, I received 117 channels. Upon disabling Tablo’s amplifier, 122 channels found their way to me. Yet, I sought but a mere half-dozen channels in truth.
To toggle the amplifier, venture into the Settings.
Choose Thy Channels
When Tablo, or any over-the-air purveyor forsooth, embarketh upon its channel scan, all therein shall be presented – the primary broadcast channels along with any sub-channels.
For instance, mine ABC affiliate hath a brace of sub-channels in tow. CBS, Fox, NBC – each doth boast more in like manner. Thus doth it unfold, encompassing even those duplicate broadcast affiliates that I ne’er seek to view. Two methods exist to remedy this with Tablo.
The simpler path may be to designate channels of favor, enabling a more streamlined guide. This concludeth thusly:
- Step 1: Indulge in a specific show on a favored channel, marking it as such.
- Step 2: Seize thy phone or tablet, journey into the Tablo app’s Guide settings, and progress to Channel Lineup.
Herein, thou may uncheck unwanted channels. Given my modest selection of a half-dozen from a vast array, the former path may prove preferable.
Dim the Glowing LED
The brightest light in the darkest night doth oft mar repose. Tablo’s azure LED, whether in slumber or shadowed viewing, doth blaze with intensity. ‘Twould be a folly to obscure it with cloth or tape or relocate the device from view, when a simpler solution doth present itself.
- Step 1: Engage the Tablo app’s Settings, seeking the General section.
- Step 2: Locate LED and disable its brilliance.
Thy nocturnal peace restored, fair reader.
Add Storage, if Thou Wilt
Tablo now boasteth 128GB of internal storage, ample for recording shows. A bounty of 50 hours or more shalt thou find therein, according to Tablo.
Yet, should thy need for more storage arise…
Behold the USB-A port upon the rear of thy Tablo device, beckoning as a gateway to expandable storage. Up to 8TB of additional capacity may be annexed thusly.
Choose wisely the nature of thy supplemental storage. Avoid the allure of flash drives, ill-suited for the continuous read/write cycles demanded by video. Fear not, for hard drives of this ilk are modestly priced. Prudence dictates a brief delay ere purchase, lest the onboard storage suffice. No need to squander coin needlessly.
Upon connection of thy new hard drive to Tablo, a swift formatting within the app’s settings shall suffice. Then, prepare to record anew.
Lo, may these sagacious tips and tricks enhance thy Tablo odyssey, as a bard imbues life into verse.
