Waze, Coyote and other anti-radar apps will soon have to hide police checks

It’s been in the air since at least April: the government is in the process of drafting a law banning driver assistance apps like Waze and Coyote from reporting roadside checks. According to Le Parisien, the source of the information, the text of the law provides: “to be occult for a period of time […] repetition” Police control reports in some areas. “Principle”explains Emmanuel Barbe, interministerial road safety delegate, quoted by the newspaper. “A criminal who abducts a person, commits a terrorist act, or gets drunk while driving is unable to escape control if he reports it to himself through the application of another driver”.

Waze and Coyote won’t be able to report police checks anytime soon

In addition to terrorism and blood alcohol controls, anti-drug operations are cited as possible reasons for activating this device. For now, however, applying this text to speed controls will be out of the question. The blocking time can be between three and twenty-four hours and should be handled by the publishers of the apps. In the case of respect, the text provides for severe penalties: two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros.

“If these are control operations, anti-drug or drink-driving operations as part of the Vigipirate plan, no one can object to that.”Pierre Chasseray, quoted by Le Dauphiné, estimates 40 million drivers. According to Europe 1, Alliance, the majority police union, supports this measure by reminding that drug traffickers use these practices to detect police controls during fast movement (cross-border transport of drugs in very fast cars).

The Union against violence on the road regrets that the law in its current form does not apply to speed controls. However, it can still be changed when examined by the Assembly.
