As part of its ‘Mobile First, Cloud First’ strategy, Microsoft acquired popular task management app Wunderlist in 2015. After the acquisition, the company stopped further development of Wunderlist and transferred its development team and resources to the To-Do app. Meanwhile, Wunderlist hasn’t had any new functionality in either mobile store for the past four years.
Microsoft finally announced that it will bid farewell to the Wunderlist app in June 2020. The company is promoting its own Microsoft To-Do app as an excellent alternative to loyal Wunderlist users.
Microsoft has developed a Wunderlist import tool to make the process smooth. But there are still those who are not fans of the result and are looking for alternatives. The Wunderlist founder offered Microsoft to buy back the app.
In this article, we are going to talk about the five best Wunderlist alternatives for iOS and Android. The list will not be platform specific. It will cover apps that are cross-platform and come with powerful functionality and integration similar to Wunderlist. Let’s jump.
1. TikTick
TickTick has become one of my top recommended task management apps. Let me explain why. TickTick combines multiple functions on top of robust task management. This is a Swiss Army Knife army of productivity apps. The app offers a capable to-do function with the ability to add dates, reminders, notes, and priorities.
The Pomo timer tab allows you to set a timer for productivity tasks. It helps you stay busy with tasks.
TickTick also offers a habit tracking function. Users can set their habits, check-in time, get reminders about the habit, and track activity with habit chains and other statistics.
The app offers one of the best theme support out of the box and is not limited to the dark theme for iOS. TickTick includes various themes based on seasons and popular cities around the world. It adds a personal touch.
Other functions include list creation, Siri Shortcuts, Face ID support, Apple Watch support, and more.
TickTick is free to use. However, you have to pay $2 per month for the premium version to unlock functions like detailed statistics, habit tracker and more. It is available for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows systems.
2. Todoist
Todoist isn’t particularly fond of features, but it provides the basics of a task management app. I like that the app lets me add every detail about a task from the floating menu. You can add dates, flags, reminders, tags, and comments.
Tap a task to add more details, such as subtasks. Todoist also lets you create unlimited lists for better organization.
In a recent update, the company added the ability to add chapters to a list. It’s an excellent way to manage complex projects at the micro level with team members.
Users can add tags and filters to quickly find related tasks. Other functions include support for Siri Shortcuts, the ability to change themes and icons, productivity statistics, and more.
Todoist follows a freemium model. The core functionality is free, but features like comments and file integration, unlimited reminders, tags, productivity trends will cost $5 per month.
3. Productive
Productive has a different take on task management. Unlike its competitors, the app is largely focused on habit tracking for continuous improvement. The app uses a beautiful UI with a default dark theme. All main options are in the bottom bar. Tap the ‘+’ icon to set a habit or a one-time task.
Habit offers some built-in templates like new year’s resolution, must-have habits, morning routine, better sleep and more. From the home screen, you can use swipe actions to complete the task and add more details.
The habit tracker shows a clean calendar UI with a chain and habit-related statistics.
Other functions include iCloud sync, Siri Shortcuts, detailed statistics and more. It’s behind most paywalls and costs $35 per year to unlock.
4. Meister’s Mission
MeisterTask is the perfect combination of task and project management. When you launch it for the first time, it asks you for the purpose of using the application. The application is divided into three parts. You can add and manage projects or add individual tasks from the task menu.
It can track time and see trends related to it during any productive task. Useful for hourly freelancers. When adding tasks, you can add details such as notes, checklist items, attachments, and more.
I don’t like the app to open with the notification screen. The least used function for me.
The remaining functions include automation, statistics and report, file attachment up to 250 MB and more. It costs $10/month which is a higher side compared to its competitors.
5. Google Tasks
After adding to-do functions to dozens of places on Android, Google finally decided what made sense and developed a separate task management app called Google Tasks. The app syncs Google tasks and allows you to create unlimited lists for convenience.
It covers all the basics like reminders, due dates and the ability to add subtasks. If you’ve invested in the Google ecosystem, you’ll appreciate Google Tasks’ integration with other services like Calendar, Google Docs, and more.
It is free to use and available on both iOS and Android. Of course, I use a dark theme option in the Google Tasks app itself.
Goodbye Wunderlist
Wunderlist is going and you better prepare for the perfect alternative. TickTick is versatile, Google Tasks is free, MeisterTask focuses on both task and project management, Todoist covers the basics, and Productive focuses on tasks and habit management.
