Two of the most exciting phones of this year are the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the new Motorola Razr. Both phones offer large foldable screens in a bendable and compact package.

Both of these phones open and close like a clamshell shell, keeping the big fancy screen tech inside, while still delivering the typical smartphone experience we all know and love these days. But the Motorola Razr is very different and offers a second screen from the outside when your phone is closed, but it has average specs and a not so good camera.
At the same time, the Galaxy Z Flip offers a larger screen, more cameras and high-end technical features. Both phones have their pros and cons, and both are super expensive.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip vs Moto Razr: Display
Obviously, screen size is an important aspect of any smartphone buying decision, and that’s true here. One is much larger than the other, which makes more sense on a folding phone.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip features a large 6.7-inch 1080p HD display that’s almost the same size as the massive Galaxy Note 10+. It then folds into a beautiful, compact package that you can easily carry around or put in your pocket. That’s the whole point of these foldable phones anyway, right?
Motorola’s Razr comes in at 6.2 inches and is just a hair over 720p HD, which is unfortunate. Folding and bendable displays are an exciting new technology, so we can’t expect great Quad-HD displays just yet, but Samsung clearly wins here. Well, at least according to the numbers.
If you look closely, Samsung has a bezel-less design with a cutout in the upper center of the screen for the front camera. While Motorola added a small iPhone-style notch for the camera and sensors, they actually cut a circle out of the screen for the front lens.
A very important aspect of screens is how they are protected. Since the Moto Razr has a plastic-OLED display, it is susceptible to scratches from nails and will not be very durable. We saw a similar issue on the original Galaxy Fold.

Obviously, the outer screen and the overall look and designs are somewhat similar, although different, but the most important aspect is the hinge in how they open and close. Motorola’s hinge actually drops into the phone’s frame, so there’s more “rolling” when the screen is off. Samsung, on the other hand, turns off almost completely, which can lead to wrinkles on the screen over time. Overall, these are two very stylish phones with unique designs, so you’ll have to decide which one is right for you. The Galaxy Z Flip has glass on both sides, so it can be pretty fragile, but the Razr’s two screens make it pretty fragile. If I had to pick one, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip definitely looks better and sleeker, but it’s hard not to admire this old-school RAZR design.

Another thing you’ll want to consider is the camera status on these phones. Samsung is known for delivering great smartphone cameras, and to be honest, Motorola isn’t like that at all. That said, here’s how they compare:
The Motorola Razr has only one main 16MP camera, which should take pretty good photos. You can also use it to take selfies, video calls and other things when the phone is closed. The screen on the outside acts as a pretty neat viewfinder. Otherwise, you have to open the phone and use the smaller 5MP selfie camera.
However, Samsung took notes from the Galaxy S series and offers two main cameras and a much better built-in selfie camera. You get two 12 MP cameras. A main sensor that will take great photos and a secondary lens for ultra-wide photos. Also, that tiny 1-inch screen on the outside will work as a camera viewfinder, which is neat. Additionally, the built-in selfie camera is twice as good as the Moto and comes with 10 megapixels.
Realistically, you’re buying this phone for the folding screen. However, at this price point you’ll want to take good pictures, and Samsung has been the clear winner.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip vs Moto Razr: Features
Perhaps the worst part of this comparison comes in the form of a list of features, mainly because Motorola has gotten really cheap. Whatever the reason, they put mid-range interiors inside this great phone. While the random processor names and numbers are confusing, know that the Moto Razr has mid-range hardware, while the Galaxy Z Flip is basically a high-end flagship smartphone.

Motorola uses an affordable Snapdragon 710 with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a really small 2,150mAh battery. Yes, this battery is definitely small.
With the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung uses the powerful Snapdragon 855+ with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage (that’s double it) and an appropriately sized 3,300mAh battery. Neither of these phones will have good battery life, so keep that in mind. On the other hand, the processor inside the Moto Razr will not drain the battery as fast, so these could have similar consequences for battery life during daily use. Maybe Motorola did this on purpose, we’re not entirely sure.
Either way, both will perform well for daily tasks, web browsing and video watching. Honestly, it’s not that big of a deal, but it’s something to consider considering the high price tags.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip vs Moto Razr: Price and Availability
Finally, we need to talk about pricing and availability. Both of these are important, as the Motorola Razr is a Verizon exclusive and the Galaxy Z Flip doesn’t seem to be available everywhere. Then, as we’ve hinted several times, neither is definitely cheap.

Yes, those are crazy high prices. You can order a Motorola Razr from Verizon now, but the website says it won’t ship until March 3. It has e-SIM so it ONLY works on Verizon in the United States.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip launched on February 14 and is available online and in stores. However, most of them appear to be out of stock, so you may or may not walk into a store and pick one up.
The Galaxy Z Flip works on other carriers such as T-Mobile other than AT&T and will likely be offered unlocked from Samsung as well as being available in several regions around the world. We will learn more soon.

In closing, we’re not really sure what to tell you about which phone to buy. If you don’t have Verizon in the United States, you’ll have to opt for the Galaxy Z Flip, as no one will carry the Razr but Verizon.
Both of these phones have their pros and cons, but overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is obviously the better phone, but in a few different ways. In terms of specs, build quality, cameras, screen size and battery life – they all cost $100 less. Then again, the Moto Razr has won a lot of fans thanks to its looks, and rightfully so.
