In April the Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update surfaced for a small market in Brazil, but that’s it so far and millions of car owners in the United States are still waiting for the latest software update. Last night Motorola made some important announcements regarding the original Moto X Android 5 Lollipop update and when we can expect it to arrive.
Android L was first announced as the successor to Android 4.4 KitKat during the company’s annual Google I/O developer event in June. Then in October, Google officially announced the full Android 5.0 Lollipop update, along with a new Nexus Player for the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet and TV. Shortly after Motorola made some announcementsand were among the first to update smartphones.
While Motorola has been quick to roll out updates for the new 2014 Moto X, Moto G, and even Moto E, those with the original Moto X from 2013 are still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat. However, this situation is about to change and for those who are eagerly waiting for the update, the latest details are below.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop update isn’t rolling out to smartphones as quickly as Android 4.4 KitKat, but there are plenty of visual and behind-the-scenes changes that make the wait a little longer than expected. Not to mention that the bugs were quickly fixed with Android 5.0.1, Android 5.0.2 versions, and then the massive Android 5.1 Lollipop release in March. And while Moto has already delivered Android 5.0 to a few devices, some of them will jump straight from KitKat to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Last week Motorola released update details and changelog webpages for both the original 2013 Moto X and the new Moto X Android 5.1.1 Lollipop updates; This was something that many did not expect. However, the updates are yet to come, and these changelogs for AT&T and T-Mobile appear to have been posted online early on.
David Schuster of Motorola late last night Taken to Google+ and it talked about the delayed Moto X Android 5.1 update and had some good news to share for owners. We can expect it to arrive in the next few weeks.
I know many people are asking about the status of Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop upgrade. I can see the frustration and, in some cases, anger at how long it took for the upgrade to be deployed. It’s been a struggle with a lack of support from some of our partners, but I’m pleased to announce that we’re launching TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well, we should start full deployment in a few weeks.”
The key part of David above is where he says “If all goes well, we should start full deployment in a few weeks”. It’s not a clear date, but it’s a good sign that those who own the original Moto X can probably wait for the Android 5.1 Lollipop update before the end of the month.
We are not sure what version of Android 5.1 Lollipop it is. The changelogs and some of Schuster’s previous comments suggest it will be Android 5.1 Lollipop, but last week Google also released Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, so we’ll have to wait and see.
All said and done, the original Moto X (and the new Moto X) will see updates to Android 5.1 Lollipop in the near future, and hopefully DROID Turbo isn’t far behind. Stay tuned and we’ll update when we know more or when the update becomes official.
