Google Play: apps radically change icons!

Google just said via its blog that it will radically change the design of the icons of the Google Play family of apps. These are all related to play store and Google Play service i.e. Google Play movies, music, games, books and newsstand. However, even though they were all part of the same family, their design was not unified, and given Google’s desire to unify its system, that was a bit of a stretch.

Fortunately, that will change. Jonathan Chung, Chief Visual Designer for version 6.4 of the Google Play Store, announced that all the icons of the Play family will be merged soon. As you can see in the image above, they will all take the form factor of the Google Play icon i.e. a triangle. In addition to this triangle, there is a small icon that clearly identifies each application. And even the latter changes from what we know and will be a flatter design.

This change will happen both on our devices and online in the next few weeks, so it will take some time before we see this change on our smartphones or tablets. With this change, Google may be trying to attract more people to these apps. As a matter of fact, although they have been downloaded billions of times according to Google Play, this is because they are pre-installed on the phones but are often removed or disabled in the process.
