Google Photos wants you to shoot vertical videos at all costs

You may have noticed this recently: Google Photos now requires videos to be rendered in portrait format even if the original video is a horizontal format movie. Results ? The final video doesn’t take up the entire surface of the screen and comes out. two thick black stripes up and down. There is currently no option to change this.

When Google Photos tries to upload videos in portrait mode

You can test it yourself: if you select several videos in portrait and landscape format in the app, the result will always be a vertical video with more or less visible black bands depending on the source video. And obviously this is a deliberate choice by the Google teams. There have been numerous complaints on Twitter or the firm’s official forums over the past few weeks.

We’ll see if Google will use all its influence to impose the vertical video format. An advancing format where more and more apps are adapting their video content in this direction. But this still surprises us: Except for smartphones, the overwhelming majority of screens are better suited to landscape format videos.
