Mozilla has launched Firefox Lockbox on Android, a free password manager we’ve seen on iOS for a while now. The foundation describes this practice as: “an experimental product […] This gives you access to saved passwords in Firefox”. The app syncs your credentials between the Firefox browser and Firefox Lockbox on your smartphone, so you never have to remember a password again. Synchronization is done through your Firefox account.
Firefox Lockbox: why should you install a password manager?
The security of passwords is often questioned by the way they are used. Not to mention the authorities, it’s a fact: on average each user has more than a hundred accounts. It only takes a little browsing to realize this: There are so many sites that invite you to create new accounts! Unfortunately, Internet users too often use unsafe passwords (sometimes they think the opposite, because there are surprising cases), or they tend to use the same password on several sites.
As a result, it often only takes one password to be compromised for hackers to gain access to a number of other accounts from which they can extract sensitive data. In conclusion, a few tips apply:
- Follow a reliable method to generate truly secure passwords
- Use a unique password per site
- Check that your password is not found in a database such as Firefox Monitor.
- Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible
However, these endpoints are undoubtedly the most problematic: two-factor authentication can use different applications that are relatively impractical. First of all, it seems impossible to memorize a unique and sufficiently complex password for all your accounts. That’s why installing a password manager has become so important.
Password managers: alternatives
There are many alternatives to Firefox Lockbox, especially 1Password or LastPass. Unfortunately, these cloud-based solutions often require a paid subscription.
How to use Firefox Lockbox
To do this, you must first use the Firefox browser on your computer – the passwords are indeed synchronized with it – and create and connect a Firefox account to it for synchronization.
Then, on your PC:
- open Firefox
- enter inside Preferences > Firefox Account
- tick Entries if not already
On your smartphone:
- Open Firefox Lock Box
- Connect your Firefox Account
- tick Entries on the menu synchronization
