According to the weekly Norman magazine, it was the photos shared on social networks that betrayed him. This is not the first time such a story has made headlines. Last December, CAF unmasked a couple of scammers based in the Alpes de Haute-Provence by referring to their Facebook posts. This is how the couple illegally received €25,112 in family benefits. Last year, Pôle Emploi also identified a 25-year-old man who had not been resident in France for several years but was still receiving unemployment benefits. The organization discovered several photos on his Facebook wall that actually showed his current life in Turkey.
The financial administration has been tracking scammers on social networks since 2018. To identify scammers, tax authorities look for photos that show a lifestyle that is inconsistent with the declared income. Relying on algorithms, tax authorities managed to recover 785 million euros in 2019.
