We informed you a few days ago that the European Union wants to increase the battery life of our smartphones and tablets so that consumers can benefit from more durable products that can last longer. An interesting passion for both the environment and the client portfolio.
But it also needs to benefit from serious software monitoring to keep your mobile device going longer, and the EU is well aware of this. For this reason, it recommends that smartphone manufacturers provide at least three years of feature updates and at least five years of security updates on their devices. Few brands currently achieve this goal. On Android, only Samsung and Google It seems to already meet this standard for the Galaxy and Pixel. Apple’s iPhones also meet this requirement.
Five years of security updates and spare parts for repairs
Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, realme or OnePlus therefore, if regulations are adopted by the EU, they will have to adapt. This may force them to increase the price of their products or to launch fewer different models on the European market each year in order to have the resources to enforce legitimate software monitoring.
Still, in an effort to extend the life of our phones, the EU is considering the possibility of forcing manufacturers to offer spare parts to consumers for five years after a product’s launch. This will encourage people to fix their device instead of buying a new one.
For software updates, repair parts or smartphone batteries, we’re just in the thinking phase right now. Discussions are still ongoing and there is no doubt that changes will be implemented in the currently envisioned texts. They may never see the light of day.
